Peru now has no president as crisis takes chaotic turn

Source: ABC News

The Latin American nation’s political turmoil took a chaotic turn Sunday when interim leader Manuel Merino quit and Congress couldn’t decide on his replacement. That left Peru rudderless and in crisis less than a week after legislators ignited a storm of protest by removing President Martín Vizcarra, an anti-corruption crusader highly popular among Peruvians.

After several hours of closed-door negotiations, congressional leaders emerged in the early hours of Monday to announce that their session was recessing without any decision and would reconvene later in the day.

There are two potential exits to the ordeal: Congress could put forward a new candidate to approve with a simple majority vote or the country’s highest court could step in. But with neither route guaranteed to bring a solution, some Peruvians called for new protests and the country verged on disorder.

“I think this is the most serious democratic and human rights crisis we have seen since Fujimori was in power,” said analyst Alonso Gurmendi Dunkelberg, referring to the turbulent rule of strongman Alberto Fujimori from 1990 to 2000.

with investigation and prison" for $10,000, Alex.'

And make no mistake, wherever that intense level of corruption and betrayal of democracy are embedded, it is because corrupt CONSERVATIVES got enough power to make it happen -- because it always is. Peru has its own greedy, corrupting moneyed families.

Just look at our own conservative legislators' corruption and betrayal. And at who's fighting for democracy and the people.

They're having another real moment internationally right now, though...! Deja vu all over again 100 years later. Way too much roaring change and diversity for those wired to fear it, and way too much wealth controlled by predatory parasites.

have a POTUS-elect, yet the idiot so far sitting potus has created chaos exactly like Peru. With danger lurking because of the calls on the right for people to "rise up" against a legally voted in replacement of the rapist-in-chief.

A news article says the Peruvian legislature voted their president out using a 19th century law that says they can remove a president for "permanent moral incapacity".

Our lame duck POTUS is the very embodiment of "permanent moral incapacity". He, too has been voted out - but, by the people and not the legislature.

It's time for R's to come together and usher their man out with as much dignity as possible. Not for the dignity of Trump, but for the dignity of America.

The President of Peru wanted to stop the corruption in the legislature, and they were having none of it. I don't see a parallel to our situation in the US.

about the wisdom and applicability of a document written by white, some slave owner, landowning old men who have been dead for more than 200 years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_Two_of_the_United_States_Constitution#Clause_6:_Vacancy_and_disability

In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, the Same shall devolve on the Vice President, and the Congress may by Law provide for the Case of Removal, Death, Resignation or Inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what Officer shall then act as President, and such Officer shall act accordingly, until the Disability be removed, or a President shall be elected.
(Note: This clause was partially superseded by the 25th Amendment in 1967.)

They knew that this was a possibility so they put safeguards in place to protect against it.
