Stephen Colbert's PAC Calls Romney a 'Serial Killer'

Last edited Sun Jan 15, 2012, 07:00 PM - Edit history (5)

The Atlantic Wire
http://www.theatlanticwire.com/entertainment/2012/01/stephen-colberts-pac-calls-romney-serial-killer/47440/

Just days after Stephen Colbert formally turned over control of his Super PAC to Jon Stewart (so Colbert could "explore" a run for president in South Carolina despite the fact that he cannot legally get on the ballot there), the PAC is up with its first negative ad, a hit on Mitt Romney and his infamous "corporations are people" remark.

If they're people, says the Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow PAC (in the voice of John Lithgow, no less), well then Mitt Romney, former corporate raider, is "a serial killer."

'Serial Killer'? - The ad is also a clever take on Ron Paul's attack ads which charge Gingrich and now Santorum with 'Serial Hypocrisy'.

NB: Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow PAC is Jon Stewart's PAC. Even that doesn't stay much because it's the manager(s), not the owners(s) who by law are empowered and responsible for expressing the PAC's personal political opinions. The manger(s) could be anyone, including Jon Stewart, but not Stephen Colbert. The Media still haven't got their heads around Citizen's United.

I routinely refer to Winning Our Future as Newt's SuperPac. Even 'PAC supporting Newt Gingrich' is not fully accurate. 'SuperPacs' are a law unto themselves - a corporation exercising their personal constitutional right to express political opinions on ANY topic. AND who owns them, once again, does not matter in practice - as any shareholder knows, it's the managers, accountable to Board who by law run and are responsible for the corporations actions., and the Board, subject to corporate law, is accountable to the shareholders. THEN, the PAC could just be a holding company for a partnership.

Thank you SCOTUS!

Not locking. I saw the clip earlier today and it is quite relevant to the current affairs of the country. Al Franken won a seat in Congress and he's one of the most serious members now. What if Colbert wins? I'll still vote for Obama, but he is a real thorn in the GOP's foot right now.

Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert declared Sunday that he believes in Super PACs because "the more money you have, the more you can speak."

Last week, Colbert turned the Super PAC that he founded over to Comedy Central host Jon Stewart so as not to run afoul of campaign laws while he considers running for the Republican presidential nomination in South Carolina.

The Stewart-controlled Super PAC released an ad Saturday attacking Colbert's potential opponent Mitt Romney as a "serial killer" for his record of destroying corporations as the head of Bain Capital. Speaking at the Iowa State Fair last year, Romney had asserted that “corporations are people.”

"I have nothing to do with that ad," Colbert told ABC's George Stephanopoulos Sunday, mocking U.S. campaign laws. "I have no control over that ad. If anything in that ad is inaccurate, if he did not say corporations are people, if he did not make his money cutting up corporate people -- I am not calling anyone a serial killer. I can't tell Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow what to do. It's not my Super PAC."

Citizen's United has given a pack of professional comedians and writers the opportunity to create impressively entertaining political ads.

There is going to be a lot of mud, more than ever before, mixed into the soup before this party is over.
I'm just glad that some of it will be entertaining.
