IS-claimed rocket attack on Kabul kills eight
Source: AFP
At least eight people were killed Saturday when a barrage of rockets struck densely populated parts of Kabul, the latest big attack in a wave of violence that has engulfed the Afghan capital.
The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for the salvo, which slammed into various parts of central and north Kabul -- including in and around the heavily fortified Green Zone that houses embassies and international firms -- just before 9:00 am (0430 GMT).
The attack came hours before US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was to meet with negotiators from the Afghan government and the Taliban in the Qatari capital Doha amid signs of progress in their peace talks.
The Iranian embassy said on Twitter that its main building had been hit by rocket fragments after one landed on the premises. No one in the compound, located just outside the Green Zone, was wounded.

(15,325 posts)There's a reason why Trump called for AM Troops to leave.
Nothing good comes from his decisions.
Asking cuz I don't know where they're located in that area. I know we once did, in Kabul area

(1,568 posts)but I get the sense that there are not many clearly "good" decisions that can be made. Just decisions that might be slightly less worse than others. I dunno, I'm just an idiot on the internet.

(1,568 posts)So, if these are IS-folks, are they in conflict with the Taliban too? I wonder, if the US and allies do ever manage to fully pull out of Afghanistan, if that country will devolve into a Syria-like civil war.
I would hate to be the person/people who have make decisions on this stuff, because it seems like every decision will have huge negative consequences. You take action and people die. You don't take action and people die. No wonder every president (real presidents, not Trump) look like they age 30 years in such a short period of time.

(15,325 posts)This is a real fear:
The area may "devolve into a Syria-like civil war."
I lost track a long time ago as to the "what, why, & who" of that unstable ME.
Only thing that adds to the fear is Trump's involvment & what power has shifted with RU being a more prominent player.
Trump, Putin, Saudi & there's no end to that power grab, other than a massive exolosion.
It then becomes a battle of Evil vs Evil.
