Europe is paying less than U.S. for many coronavirus vaccines

Source: Washington Post

The European Union is paying less money than the United States for a range of coronavirus vaccines, including the Pfizer-BioNTech inoculation currently being rolled out across the country, according to a Washington Post comparison of the breakdowns.

The costs to the E.U. had been confidential until a Belgian official tweeted — and then deleted — a list late Thursday.

Comparing that list to calculations by Bernstein Research, an analysis and investment firm, it appears the 27-nation union has a 24 percent discount on the Pfizer vaccine compared to the United States, paying $14.76 per dose compared to $19.50 in the United States. Some of that difference may reflect that the E.U. subsidized that vaccine’s development.

The bloc will pay 45 percent less than the United States for the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine currently under development. But it will pay 20 percent more than the United States for the Moderna vaccine, which is expected to be approved for U.S. use on Friday.

when "Operation Warped on Speed" offered to underwrite Pfizer's R&D.

Wonder what strings Pfizer didn't want to be saddled with.

is the initial developer and received the subsidy from Germany (is a German company). Pfizer was brought on as a partner for stage 3 trials, marketing / approval expertise, manufacturing, and distribution.

I'm worrying about all the folk who don't have fifteen bucks plus the cost of an office visit or clinic nurse visit.

Choosing between groceries and the med --- why do we expect everyone to be able to get it?

Between insurance and government subsidies, nobody in the U.S. should be out of pocket for the vaccine.

No need to worry. (about this)

Edit to add: it's been stated for a while that some pharmacies or doctors may charge for administering the stuff. Hopefully they will choose not to.
