Russian hackers compromised Microsoft cloud customers through third party, putting emails and other data at risk(Complete article title)
Russian government hackers have compromised Microsoft cloud customers and stolen emails from at least one private-sector company, according to people familiar with the matter, a worrying development in Moscows ongoing cyberespionage campaign targeting numerous U.S. agencies and corporate computer networks.
The intrusions appear to have occurred via a Microsoft corporate partner that handles cloud-access services, those familiar with the matter said. They did not identify the partner or the company known to have had emails stolen. Like others, these people spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss what remains a highly sensitive subject.
Microsoft hasnt publicly commented on the intrusions. On Thursday, an executive with the tech giant sought to downplay the issues significance.
Our investigation of recent attacks has found incidents involving abuse of credentials to gain access, which can come in several forms, Jeff Jones, Microsofts senior director for communications, said. We have still not identified any vulnerabilities or compromise of Microsoft product or cloud services.

I believe Microsoft's cloud computing solution is what Trump demanded the Pentagon accept after pressuring the DoD to reverse their Jedi contract award to Amazon. Curious.

(5,088 posts)And, I used to tell the kids at the school all the time. NOTHING you do on line is private or inaccessible. There will always be someone who can get to it. Which is why I do not use the cloud nor do I store things in my computer. That goes in my external drive which is unplugged until I need it.

His last comments on the subject said that it is China that is responsible. Never mind that all of the intelligence services say the evidence all points to Russia.

(22,231 posts)put in the cloud deliberately. Amazon's for the books and Google for the pictures.
I am certain there are other things of which I am not aware but these I know are deliberate

Sound like 2 distinct entities to me. Appearing to answer the question while providing different information?

(33,643 posts)And something entirely different to break into the actual 'cloud' i.e. the servers themselves, such that one could move from account to account, stealing things.
Accounts will always be hacked, nothing you can do about that (although insisting on 2-step authentication goes a long way, some people and companies decide it's not worth the inconvenience).

(33,643 posts)Do you have a gmail or yahoo or any type of 'free' email account? If you do, those emails are probably in 'the cloud'
Do you have bank account(s) or retirement account(s)? Your bank probably has at least some of your info in 'the cloud'. A mortgage? Same. Credit Cards? Same.
I'm sure lots of government entities who know things about you also have that information in 'the cloud', including the IRS.
If you have a smart phone, a HUGE amount of what you do with that phone is stored in 'the cloud'.
And most websites are hosted in one cloud or another ... I wouldn't be surprised if this one is too.

(978 posts)he was very savvy about security. That's why all device drivers had to be QA'd and approved by Apple, and all apps on the apple store were likewise scrutinized, and why you have to jailbreak an iphone in order load an unsanctioned app. The one greatest HACK on iPhones that most people aren't aware of, if you connect your iPhone to an exchange server, the exchange server can send an order to your iphone to wipe it. This was a deal made between Mac and uShit to make sure employees couldn't walk out the door with the company phone and steal business contacts to take with them to their next job.
