McConnell is said to be pleased about impeachment, believing it will be easier to purge Trump from t

Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, has told associates that he believes President Trump committed impeachable offenses and that he is pleased that Democrats are moving to impeach him, believing that it will make it easier to purge him from the party, according to people familiar with his thinking. The House is voting on Wednesday to formally charge Mr. Trump with inciting violence against the country.

At the same time, Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the minority leader and one of Mr. Trump’s most steadfast allies in Congress, has asked other Republicans whether he should call on Mr. Trump to resign in the aftermath of the riot at the Capitol last week, according to three Republican officials briefed on the conversations.

While Mr. McCarthy has said he is personally opposed to impeachment, he and other party leaders have decided not to formally lobby Republicans to vote “no,” and an aide to Mr. McCarthy said he was open to a measure censuring Mr. Trump for his conduct. In private, Mr. McCarthy reached out to a leading House Democrat to see if the chamber would be willing to pursue a censure vote, though Speaker Nancy Pelosi has ruled it out.

Taken together, the stances of Congress’s two top Republicans — neither of whom has said publicly that Mr. Trump should resign or be impeached — reflected the politically fraught and fast-moving nature of the crisis that the party faces in the wake of last week’s assault by a pro-Trump mob during a session to formalize President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s electoral victory.

1. Like I have been saying

we are throwing them a life raft because it is the right thing to do. They are looking at it from the lens of power politics not caring what actions actually support and defend the Constitution. They might as well use the Constitution for toilet paper.

15. I've been saying the same thing. Democrats would be doing what

Republicans don't have the balls to do.

Disbarring Trump would be an lifeline for Republicans. Better to have a long investigation followed by a long trial, turning the screw on the Republican complicity.

Mitch and other Republican leadership will never have power as long as Trump scares their rank and file

3. Mitch McConnell never misses an opportunity to be an asshole.

He is the most amoral of men. Right and wrong does not exist for him. He knows that Trump is a psychopath and is mentally unhinged, but he would support impeachment not because it is the right thing for the nation but because he thinks it would help his political party.

No one should be surprised. Once a snake always a snake.

If McConnell is on board to remove, let's get it done. We'll go back to being enemies as soon as it's over.

5. I welcome his help, to be honest

I am perfectly happy with McConnell directing his rage at Trump and his enablers. I don't like McConnell but that is exactly what he needs to be doing. If he wants to help with the De-Trumpification of our country then I say welcome aboard. Just keep a close eye on him.

He's 80 years old. His political career is almost over anyway. If he can do something for the greater good then he could be a valuable ally. Just keep him on a very short leash and if he acts up, throw him to the wolves (metaphorically speaking)

9. Democrats Are Actually Doing McConnell a Favor With Impeachment and...

...that is okay. Trump should still be impeached.

The reason why this helps Republicans is that if impeachment was not on the table, then Trump would continue to try to burn the country in his wake, including Senate Republicans by threatening them.

However, with a likely Senate trial in the future that could open the door to criminal prosecution, Trump has to try to stay on the good side of Senate Republicans. If he continues to burn bridges with enough Senate Republicans or tries to stir violence ahead of the inauguration, then he may lose enough Republicans that he might be convicted.

So, impeachment actually hands McConnell leverage over Trump, and I am sure at a certain level, McConnell is going to hold this over Trump to try to keep him from trying to incite another attack.

Finally, if there is a trial, I do not think that McConnell would shed any tears if Trump gets convicted, because this would mean that could mean that Trump and bootlickers like Ted Cruz and Hawley are taken off the board as Presidential aspirants in 2024.

They have to be thinking about all that donor cash that would otherwise go to Trump, even if he only pretends to run for POTUS.

I'm sure he sees the tide turning against Trump, especially among corporate donors.
