Philadelphia let college kids distribute vaccines. The result was a disaster, volunteers say.
Philadelphia is home to some of the most venerated medical institutions in the country. Yet when it came time to set up the citys first and largest coronavirus mass vaccination site, officials turned to the start-up Philly Fighting COVID, a self-described group of college kids with minimal health-care experience.
Chaos ensued......
If there was anybody poised and ready to do this, it was us, founder Ala Stanford told the magazine, adding that the city had suggested she team up with Philly Fighting COVID to administer vaccines. I happen to have been a doctor for 23 years, longer than some of these kids have been living, but I need these white kids to teach me how to do it?

There's a large vaccination site being set up in my county. According to a story in the local paper about it, many retired doctors and nurses are volunteering to help with vaccinations. Our county community college also has a 2 yr nursing program and those students may also be involved in helping if needed.

(128,717 posts)The organization "Philly Fighting Covid" was originally a non-profit that offered to partner with and had a contract with the city for COVID-19 testing with volunteer medical personnel. The org then offered to do vaccinations (also with volunteer medical personnel) and promoted themselves pretty heavily, offering "sign ups", etc. But shortly after, changed to "for-profit" and it went downhill from there.
From what I gather from the city's presser that I watched yesterday, the group did one weekend of vaccinations.
As a note, having "some of the most venerated medical institutions in the country" is irrelevant when a city of almost 1.6 million people is only getting 20,000 doses per week (and was told to expect that until the end of February). Philly's dose allotments are coming directly from CDC (as one of the 5 cities getting direct distribution) and are not coming out of the state's allocation.
