Speaking with CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union," Cassidy was asked several times whether he would support Trump should he run in 2024 or back him if he wins the GOP nomination, as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said he would last week.
"That's a theoretical that I don't think will come to pass," Cassidy responded, adding, "I don't mean to duck, but the truth is you could ask me [about] a lot of people, if they are fit. Point is, I don't think he'll be our nominee."
"Political campaigns are about winning," the senator added before pointing to the loss of GOP control of the House, Senate and White House under the former president.

(53,947 posts)Trump will be so buried in law suits, criminal actions, and debt payments to Deutsche Bank 3 years from now, neither he nor any of his idiot children will be available to run a campaign.
Maybe Tiffany will be in the clear

(25,817 posts)The people who think he will be are delusional. Even without the chance he might actually be in jail, his support, such as it is, will drop off precipitously.

(11,254 posts)from the first time that I heard it. And then went from that to being amazed at the amount of people that are truly concerned ... Still think 'delusional' is the best description.
Trump's ability to suck all the air out of a room -- is fading rapidly. Outside of a few coonskin caps, and an occasional flag mounted on a pickup .. it's going to be pretty much "Who?" Watch -- there will even be a limited amount of requests for "campaign appearances" for prospectives in 22.

The whole point of this 2024 talk is for him to retain some power and raise money for his "campaign."

(11,254 posts)I think that's about all the answer needed.
Just my opinion .. but I don't think it's absolutely necessary for a politician (or anyone really) to answer a gottcha' question. It's a debasement of conversation (communication) implying that one person 'owns' or is 'directing' the narrative -- and I won't go along with playing that game either. If you want to have a discussion with me -- then you accept my input -- as I see fit to input. Don't try to bully me into 'your' narrative.

(10,104 posts)He's going to make as much money as he can and will enjoy having people come suck up to him, its really the perfect scam for him. I also think support for him is going to keep slipping away. He won't care about that as long as he can maintain his hard core delusional followers. I doubt he'll end up in jail or really face the consequences, other than lost revenue to his shit hole businesses. Really, I'd be surprised if his health is good enough, or maybe he'll finally drop dead. That's kind of a funny thought, where will his worshippers go if he died? Since they think he is the chosen one.

(64,877 posts)With all the "Stop The (Pretend) Steal", the silly lawsuits, and 1/6/21, the results of the election are 40 days old.
In a normal year, we'd be 4 months down the road.
One term presidents, even with a following, become yesterday's news in 6 months.
Because of the artificially extended election battle, we're now where we should have been in mid-December.
Even ignoring the probable legal issues Tr&%$ may face, he'll be just a guy who got stomped last November.
The legal issues, should they be what I'm guessing they'll be, will make him radioactive in a hurry.
But either way, the sycophancy will fade as the lack of true power decreases his relevance.

(111,174 posts)but the man is a self promoter and marketer with the televangelist crowd securely behind him. I'll think he's dangerous until he's been dead and buried for at least ten years. Even then, his cult will likely persist for a while.
I agree that the "stolen election" fantasy will fade away as it becomes less useful. I just don't think the man himself will be so easily got rid of in a lot of circles.
