Judiciary Committee greenlights Garland's AG nomination

Source: The Hill

BY JORDAIN CARNEY - 03/01/21 01:29 PM EST

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Monday to approve Merrick Garlandís nomination for attorney general, teeing him up to be confirmed by the Senate as soon as this week.

The panel voted 15-7 in favor of President Bidenís pick to lead the Justice Department. GOP Sens. Mike Lee (Utah), Ted Cruz (Texas), Ben Sasse (Neb.), Josh Hawley (Mo.), Tom Cotton (Ark.), John Kennedy (La.) and Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.) voted against his nomination. Cruz, Sasse, Cotton and Hawley are each viewed as potential 2024 presidential contenders.

The vote comes nearly five years after Republicans blocked Garland from getting a hearing or a vote for his 2016 Supreme Court nomination, and is the first nomination cleared by Democrats since the party took over the committee.

Garland is expected to easily be confirmed by the full Senate, despite the GOP opposition in committee. A final confirmation vote hasn't been scheduled, but could happen as soon as this week.

1. The usual suspects, Hawley and Cruz; they wouldn't vote for Jesus

if Biden nominated him. I'm a bit surprised at Sasse, though.

2. Sasse disappoints me too.

He was just rebuked (not censured) by some GOP Nebraska group. Not that it should matter, but he just can't seem to make a total and complete break. He's like a little kid standing on a diving board, preparing to dive, and then he gets cold feet and runs back to shore, then runs out on the diving board again, and then back again.

Maybe I'm hallucinating, but I feel like there's a Democrat inside him trying to break out.

9. Who's worse? People who righteously believe wrong is right

because their tribe does or people who know and feel both right and wrong but choose wrong?

It's easy to believe he'd be a blue-dog Democrat if it was to his advantage. But he's at best a man of very weak character and principles who abandoned all principles and betrayed his office and constituents many times over -- like the rest of the crowd he chose to run with.

11. Yes, it would appear that Sasse isn't an ideologue but an opportunist

who folds like a cheap lawn chair when he gets pushback from the party.

6. Yeah, Sasse is odd.

But whatever. If we win a vote, I don't give a crap what any GQP senator does. We win.

3. Good

and it's also good to see the break down of votes knowing that the "Do-nothings" (except when spearheading insurrections) a/k/a the "Know-nothings" are going to vote against anything and everything that Democrats propose regardless.

4. List of Judiciary committee members

Dems: (11) Durbin, Leahy, Feinstein, Whitehouse, Klobuchar, Coons, Blumenthal, Hirono, Booker, Padiila, Ossoff

Rs: (11) Grassley, Graham, Cornyn, Lee, Cruz, Sasse, Hawley, Cotton, Kennedy, Tillis, Blackburn

Meaning Grassely, Graham, Cornyn and Tillis all voted to approved Garland.

7. Grassley, Graham, Cornyn and Tillis aren't likely 2024 candidates.

Grassley is older than God and won't be running again. Graham is firmly implanted inside Trump's colon, where he's safe, and he's from SC, where he's also safe. Cornyn is from TX and he isn't up for re-election for another six years; same with Tillis. So they probably feel like they can afford to go against the MAGAts now and then. Cruz, Hawley, Cotton and Sasse, on the other hand, are potential candidates if Trump ever gets his fat orange ass out of the way. In the meantime they have to placate the MAGAts and His Lardship himself. This might be Sasse's symbolic gesture of re-toeing the GOP party line, knowing Garland would be approved anyhow.

8. Cruz, Hawley and Cotton are liable to be the TARGET of DOJ investigations.

I am sure they do not want anyone honest and competent in the USAG position.

10. The potential nominees for republicans is a very sorry lot...how sad they don't have anything better

to offer.

Four clowns...surprised Marsha Blackburn doesn't want to jump in the clown car.

12. So this was supposed to happen last week or maybe the week before

So that Garland would take office March 1st. Today.

Instead we have this slow dragging going on, i don't get it. We needed Garland confirmed weeks ago.
