New Orleans Archdiocese Asks Catholics to Avoid Johnson & Johnson COVID Vaccine

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Yahoo News / National Review

The Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans is asking Catholics to avoid the recently-approved Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, which it says is “morally compromised” by its “extensive use of abortion-derived cell lines.”

In a statement on Friday, the archdiocese noted that while deciding whether to receive the vaccine is an individual choice, that “the latest vaccine from Janssen/Johnson & Johnson is morally compromised as it uses the abortion-derived cell line in development and production of the vaccine as well as the testing.”

While a number of COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers have used cells originally derived from an aborted fetus in the 1970s, the archdiocese argues that Johnson & Johnson “extensive use” is worse than that of Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines, which used the cells lines only to test their vaccines, according to Religion News Service. This makes the “connection to abortion … extremely remote,” in the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, the statement argues, recommending that Catholics choose one of those instead, if provided a choice.

While the archdiocese claims the decision is in line with guidance from the Vatican, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Catholic Bioethics Center, none of the three have issued statements denouncing the new vaccine....

Once more shown, many Roman Catholics consider the life of the unborn more important than that of the living. 1970's fetus???

25. If I was Catholic, I would find the Pope's position far more persuasive than the local archbishop.

If I was Catholic, I would be obliged to accept that the Pope is Christ's vicar on earth. The local archbishop is just another aged cleric.

Besides which, it my understanding that American Catholics tend to be Cafeteria Catholics who feel free to ignore pronouncements from clerics they find unreasonable.

Whether its believing in Q-anon baby-eating pedophiles hanging out at pizza joints or invisible cloud beings, they're all a lie. God (if you insist) gave us brains so we could figure things out. When we do, it is stupidity not to use that new knowledge to save ourselves instead of leaving it to 'God's hands'.

And while I'm bagging on religion, TAX the Churches! Okay, open season on me, blast away.

they always come out against something, that is a form of life killing people to live you know like a virus, it is a life form that likes everyone until it can get to another hosts............and the other one is blue, like dead ...........I just wonder if any of these priests had to have blood transfusion or they take an aspirin for anything, or had a infection, or better yet some other GD disease, and then have some kind of cell research like I don't know like a cure for polio, beacsue when they were a young'un they had to get a shot to get into any school , or better yet when they come to this country from a far or if they go back to the Vatican, don't they have to have the shots updated for there state and this country.............

And more for all the non-Catholics. Of course, we also have the anti-vaxxers, who follow the "science" they find on the internet. More vaccine for me.

Obviously, I only need one treatment. What I'm thinking of are all the millions of people who don't believe life begins at conception, or that vaccines are an attempt by the U.S. government to turn us into brainwashed zombies. If there is more vaccine available because they don't want it then there are millions of other people in other countries who would be grateful for the serum. Me, I think we're all one worldwide family, so if more members of my family can be vaccinated, I'm happy. I feel sorry, not for these people but for their children, who don't have a choice in the matter.

57. National Review is a right wing source.

Here's an article from the Nawlins daily newspaper: Archdiocese calls Johnson & Johnson vaccine 'morally compromised' due to abortion ties

The Archdiocese of New Orleans is warning local Roman Catholics that the newly authorized Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine is "morally compromised" and should be avoided, if possible, in favor of other vaccines because of a connection to abortion.

In recent weeks, public health officials in Louisiana and across the U.S. have advised against weighing the different vaccines against each other, telling residents that they should get vaccinated as soon as they are eligible and a shot is available.

The statement from the local church, issued Friday, may raise questions about that guidance among area Catholics. The directive also appeared to go farther than recent public pronouncements from other church bodies in singling out the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

In its statement, the archdiocese argued that cells used to develop, test and produce the one-dose Johnson & Johnson shot were derived from abortions performed in the 1970s and 1980s.

So wearing a face covering and discouraging church gatherings to save lives infringes on their freedoms. And now they encourage not getting a Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccine because it's morally compromised.
How many people have contracted and died from Covid-19 from unmasked church gatherings?
Isn't that the same as abortion?
Just that the victims were alive and living among us.

Grew up in a Catholic grade school. Was an altar boy and even did the 6 am mass at the convents during my altar boy days. Thought about becoming a priest, and visited Mt. Angel with the boys in my class. Went to Catholic high school, and even got my Masters degree from University of Portland, a Catholic university.

I am so turned off with the Catholic business today, I have no association at all with them. I'm embarrassed by their presence in society. They, along with the pro-birth movement, are part of the sickness that has this country in the toilet today.
