Catholics Should Avoid Johnson & Johnson Vaccine If Others Available, Official U.S. Group Says
Source: Forbes
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishopsthe official group representing the church in the U.S.urged Catholics Tuesday to avoid taking the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine if other options are available, saying the J&J vaccine "raises questions about the moral permissibility"even though Johnson & Johnson has stated it did not use fetal tissues in its vaccine.

President Joe Biden, also known for his strong Catholic faith and being only the second-ever Catholic president, praised the vaccine's approval over the weekend, calling it "exciting news for all Americans."

The Vatican made its statement in December after citing "diverse and sometimes conflicting pronouncements in the mass media by bishops, Catholic associations, and experts" when it came to vaccine ethics, especially given that there has also been concern around Pfizer and Moderna's development practices. One week before the Vatican released its statement, the U.S. Conference of Bishops said Pfizer and Moderna vaccines came from a "remote connection to morally compromised cell lines," while saying a potential vaccine from AstraZeneca was "more morally compromised" when it came to abortion.

(8,200 posts)They keep beating the same drum even concerning contraception. It appear that it is a race to gladly drive anyone who disagrees with them driven from the church of true believers. They are oblivious of their Master's basic teachings in which He criticized the religious leaders as placing heavy demands on the people's backs and failing to provide any support to help to left the burden. Pope John XXIII attempted in vain to awaken the church to fact that it was quickly becoming totally irrelevant to the life style and needs of especially the younger people of today's society. His warning were reject by the entrenched hierarchy who only viewed it as an onslaught on what the viewed as their right to dominate what was morally acceptable. The result was easily predictable. It was a total disaster.

In 1974, a reporter asked Butz about Pope Paul VIs opposition to using artificial contraception as a means to assuage world hunger. Butz replied, in effect, that the popes rejection of this approach was of little interest because Pope Paul had already stated, in a 1968 encyclical, that artificial contraception violated church law under any circumstances. Heres how he put it: He no play-a da game, he no make-a da rules. *

Butz started by telling a dirty joke involving intercourse between a dog and a skunk. When the conversation turned to politics, Boone, a right-wing Republican, asked Butz why the party of Lincoln was not able to attract more blacks. The Secretary responded with a line so obscene and insulting to blacks that it forced him out of the Cabinet last week and jolted the whole Ford campaign....

(1,898 posts)If abortion is an absolute evil, then it is only logical that Catholics should avoid ANY and ALL vaccines with even the
most tenuous connection to "morally compromised cell lines." IOW, they're trying to have their cake and eat it too.
Of course logically, the stated permissiveness with regard to the preferable vaccines (Moderna and Pfizer) which are ostensibly
more "remote" in their relatedness to abortion could be construed to imply that the "evil" of abortion as it were, is a matter of degree and hence not "absolute."

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican office charged with promoting and defending church morals and traditions, said in a document released Monday that "when ethically irreproachable Covid-19 vaccines are not available ... it is morally acceptable to receive Covid-19 vaccines that have used cell lines from aborted fetuses in their research and production process."

(8,756 posts)This has been a theme for Papa Frank.
Him and the Vatican have been aggressively pro-vax and released a statement allowing Catholics to use any vax, even if stem cells were involved at some point.
But conservative bishops are always looking for an excuse to muck with their progressive leader.

ROME (AP) The Vatican is taking Pope Francis pro-vaccine stance very seriously: Any Vatican employee who refuses to get a coronavirus shot without a valid medical reason risks being fired.
A Feb. 8 decree signed by the governor of the Vatican city-state says that employees who opt out of vaccination without a proven medical reason could be subject to a sanction up to and including the interruption of the relationship of employment.
The directive cited the need to protect Vatican employees in the workplace, as well as guidelines issued by Francis advisory COVID-19 commission, which said individuals have a moral responsibility to get vaccinated given that refusing a vaccine can constitute a risk for others.
Some Catholics and other believers have expressed faith-based concerns about vaccines because some of the ones available were indirectly connected to research that used aborted fetal cells. The Vaticans doctrine office has judged it morally acceptable for Catholics to receive COVID-19 vaccines, including those that relied on research that used cells derived from aborted fetuses.
