3 die when car hits 9 people in San Diego; driver in custody

Source: AP

By JULIE WATSON

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A driver lost control and veered onto a sidewalk Monday dotted with homeless tents in downtown San Diego, killing three people and injuring six others, including two who are hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

The driver — whom authorities identified only as a 71-year-old man — was heading through a tunnel underneath a community college campus when he drove his Volvo station wagon up on the sidewalk shortly after 9 a.m., said San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit. He was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired.

“For whatever reason, (the driver) veered to the right, went up on the sidewalk, struck multiple pedestrians there and then came back on to the roadway,” Nisleit said, offering “my deepest condolences,” to the families of those who died.

Three people died at the scene. Five of the six others who were injured were taken to hospitals, authorities said.

3. OMG! This is only about 1.5 miles from my house

I'm very familiar with that tunnel and travel it fairly often. It always seemed very safe, being a one-way street and wide, 4 or 5 lanes. The homeless do sleep on the sidewalk and since it is raining I'd expect there were a lot more homeless people than usual. So sad for those killed and injured!

12. Hi neighbor

Seems someone is killed on a bike or the side of the road every three or four months here.

We live in North Park

13. Yeah it can be dangerous.

My roomie had a bike accident on Adams heading east just past the 15. Car pulled in front of him to enter the small parking lot. He didn't have time to react and hit the car, bounced off, flipped his bike. Ended up with several broken ribs and a punctured lung along with many scrapes and bruises...amazingly his bike was not damaged except for some small cosmetic stuff.

I'm on the boarder between Hillcrest and North Park...just inside the 92103 zip code.

14. I know that intersection well

Use to run up Adam’s to Kensington all the time. It’s a dangerous intersection for sure. Hope your roommate is well!

We are north of Adam’s between Texas and the 805. I use to live in 92103 but it’s been almost 20 years.

10. Sad news.... elderly driver, might be meds or a medical issue

As an aside, when I lived in SD there was an incident at a homeless camp on the river where two me killed and butchered a sea lion. Not a savory location...

15. Daylight Savings Time

Car accidents increase markedly when we mess with our diurnal clocks.

16. By that logic wouldn't roads near time zone boundaries be exceptionally dangerous?

Are they? Cross over and it's an hour earlier (or later) How do people do cross country road trips without totally wiping out every time they cross into a new time zone?

17. This is but one study

The problem is our circadian rhythm. May be more profound than we realize.

18. Driving is hard, it's a commitment to safety. If you get stressed running late, take an Uber?

Too many people don't take driving seriously. a 1 hour time change is actually the least of your worries when out and about in a car. Seriously, if you don't think you can handle a 1 hour shift, you need to rethink your mobility plan.
