Judge rules Derek Chauvin murder trial will continue and stay in Minneapolis

Source: CNN

(CNN)A judge in Minneapolis Friday rejected defense motions to postpone and relocate Derek Chauvin's murder trial in the death of George Floyd.

The decision comes one week after the city agreed to pay $27 million to Floyd's estate -- an announcement defense lawyers argued prejudiced their client in the middle of jury selection.

The Minneapolis city council unanimously voted last week to settle a lawsuit with Floyd's family.

The public announcement of the settlement in the middle of jury selection infuriated Chauvin's defense, who argued that it prejudiced jurors against their client. Attorney Eric Nelson asked Judge Peter Cahill to move and delay the trial in light of the publicity.

1. Had it moved to another venue, it would have come to my city....

For we are big enough to facilitate it, but may not have wanted the publicity.

The murder of George Floyd took place in Minneapolis. There should it be held.

3. I often wonder how any trial of this magnitude can be considered to have a neutral venue.

The entire country is going to be hearing about this trial. It's like the Zimmerman, Simpson and Casey Anthony trials all put together. I'd compare it to Rodney King but with more television, more attention, and bigger risks.

4. This whole trial is hanging by a tenuous thread....

It was a master stroke of dumbassness to announce the potential settlement of $27M during jury selection....
