Democrats unveil bill to prevent Sackler family from evading lawsuits through bankruptcy

Source: The Hill

Democratic Reps. Carolyn Maloney (N.Y.) and Mark DeSaulnier (Calif.) unveiled legislation on Friday aimed at preventing the Sackler family from evading lawsuits over the opioid crisis through bankruptcy proceedings.

The “Stop Shielding Assets from Corporate Known Liability by Eliminating Non-Debtor Releases Act,” or SACKLER Act, would close a loophole to prevent those who have not filed for bankruptcy from being released from lawsuits brought by the federal government, as well as states and local governments in bankruptcy.

Purdue Pharma, which the Sackler family owns, filed for bankruptcy in 2019 as part of an agreement to settle litigation over its role in the opioid epidemic.

The Washington Post reported at the time that the drugmaker asked the bankruptcy court to temporarily halt lawsuits against the family itself even though they hadn't filed for bankruptcy, a request that was later granted.

She had a bad car accident requiring multiple surgeries and was put on SS disability. She got addicted to OxyContin and the abuse of the drug killed her. Screw this family that marketed this drug as non or mildly addictive. They knew what it would do which helped them sell more of it!

The rich will continue their paths of destruction until they actually start to suffer consequences.

The problem is not the corporations committing crimes. It is the people who run the corporations who are committing crimes and then walking away without punishment.

Sinema and Manchin will protect them by making sure Moscow Mitch can stop it.

... in offshore accounts? The Sackler family members took their ill-gotten gains out of the US several years ago, probably even before Chump came to the White House. I believe some Sacklers are living outside the country, in England and other parts of Europe. I doubt these people are very worried about the US courts or legislators.
