Police respond to active shooter at King Soopers in Boulder

Source: Denver Post

The Boulder Police Department is warning people to stay away from the King Soopers store at 3600 Table Mesa Drive because of an active shooter at the store.

Department officials tweeted the warning at 2:49 p.m. Monday. A public information officer was on their way to the scene. Further information was not immediately provided.

The King Soopers store anchors a large shopping center in the southern part of Boulder, a few blocks from Fairview High School. The Boulder Valley School District is on spring break this week. District spokeswoman Randy Barber said to his knowledge no students or staff were in any of the buildings near the King Soopers on Monday.

A YouTube user was livestreaming from the scene starting at roughly 2:30 p.m. His video showed what appear to be shooting victims, and police approaching the front of the badly damaged store in an armored vehicle. He claimed he was still hearing gunshots from within the store while taking cover in the parking lot.

3. From the same article...

In November 2017, Scott Ostrem walked into a Walmart in Thornton and fired seven shots in 20 seconds, killing Victor Vasquez, 26, Carlos Moreno, 66, and Pamela Marques, 53. Ostrem was later given three life sentences. A motive was never made clear.

Hmmm...white guy kills three random people with Hispanic surnames and "a motive was never made clear?" Maybe it was mental illness, or violent video games, or rap music? Or "maybe we'll never know what drove him to do it"...?

26. It's a nice store

I worked there back when the pandemic started and although it was stressful, the customers never complained about having to wear masks.

6. Here is the streamer that caught the beginning of this.

The police pushed him back now, but he was inside the building while gunfire was popping off. You can rewind if you so desire.

Gruesome shit!

I'm going to take a guess that the guy likely will not do that. Just an impression I get.

10. Twitter and utoob are removing the videos.

If they are gruesome and graphic, I am glad they are doing that. Those people who were shot deserve a little respect at this moment. As long as those who need to see them have them available, they should remain offline.

24. They deserve respect, but seeing the carnage may move the needle.

When violence is reported and not witnessed, it abstracts. It becomes easier to rationalize, easier to forget.

The horrors of the Vietnam War were on TV every night. It turned the nation against it. The GOP learned and never allowed that press access to their wars again.

32. I concur.

I remember growing up in Cincy during Larry Flynt's obscenity trial. He send a color mailer to every household in Hamilton County filled with "real obscenities": war wounds, lots of blood and viscera. The point being: vulvae aren't obscene.

Most parents including mine quickly hid it from their children, but guess what? Everyone saw it at school the next day. Really affected my perspective on wars, guns, violence.

17. WaPo had earlier reported they had a suspect in custody

The Boulder police tweeted about a "person of interest" in custody -

Boulder shooting: Multiple people killed, including police officer; suspect in custody

ByPaulina Villegas

Multiple people were killed at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colo., on Monday, including a Boulder police officer, after a shooter opened fire on customers and responding officers.

A suspect is in custody, though police officials did not offer a potential motive. Officials did not report the number of fatalities, and they said the only seriously injured person was the shooter.

18. How tragic, and in one of my favorite towns in North America!

I used to do a lot of business in Boulder, and traveled there probably six times a year.

It is a town of gentle people. I sympathize with the victims, and I hope no one I knew was among them.

19. The Boulder police tonight reported 10 murder victims, including one Boulder police officer.

I have shopped at the particular King Soopers in the past, on occasion, but it is not my primary King Soopers store. It is in a middle to upper class neighborhood in Boulder. I doubt the victims will turn out to be Black or Hispanic, although I would not be surprised it they included an Asian American or two. More will be revealed, I'm sure.

A body was in the parking lot. Another near the entrance. Another one was just inside the entrance.
