Taiwan reports largest ever incursion by Chinese air force

Source: Reuters

Twenty Chinese military aircraft entered Taiwan’s air defence identification zone on Friday, in the largest incursion yet reported by the island’s defence ministry and marking a dramatic escalation of tension across the Taiwan Strait.

The island’s defence ministry said the air force deployed missiles to “monitor” the incursion into the southwestern part of its air defence identification zone. It also said its planes warned the Chinese aircraft, including by radio.

It marked the largest incursion to date by the Chinese air force since Taiwan’s defence ministry began disclosing almost daily Chinese military flights over the waters between the southern part of Taiwan and the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands in the South China Sea last year.

*snip*

A person familiar with Taiwan’s security planning told Reuters the Chinese military was conducting exercises that would simulate an operation against U.S. warships that sail through the Bashi Channel.

these articles make it sound like some kind of invasion. this exercise isn't that unusual. If the US keeps militarizing the straits with increased patrols and keeps arming up Taiwan, this air activity will increase. Typically US forces don't stay long in the area and then a Chinese exercise takes place and the western press gets all alarmist. I don't think the planned doubling of Indo Pacific budgets is going to be able to change this pattern. And the US plans to deploy more offensive missile forces in the area will only make it worse.

8. For All of Trump's Threats, He Left the Door Wide Open to China

Trump was so busy tearing up international agreements, including blowing up TPP, creating tensions with Australia, and backing out of the WHO that Republicans left the field wide open for China. Republicans were not "tough" on China. They were just happy to scapegoat Asians while yielding influence abroad such that our allies Philippines, South Korea, Japan and Australia could no longer rely on the United States.

Stoking anti-Asian racism at home is not being tough on China. Instead, it was a smoke screen similar to Trump's tough talk and threats against North Korea while pretty much turning his back to North Korean efforts to develop long range missiles.

So, yes, the United States is once again going to help out its allies, including rejoining the WHO and providing vaccines to allies, and this is going to threaten China, which once had the field to itself in the Pacific Rim thanks to Trump.

S. Korea's nuclear armament will only justify N. Korea's nuclear ambition: Vincent Brooks
Yonhap News Mar 23

Arming South Korea with its own nuclear weapons against threats from North Korea would only help justify the North's ongoing pursuit of nuclear weapons, and thus making it impossible to denuclearize the North, a former commander of US Forces Korea said Monday.

Vincent Brooks argued the US must instead periodically reaffirm its commitment to the joint defense of South Korea and strengthen its extended nuclear deterrence for South Korea.

"My opinion is that the provision of nuclear weapons in South Korea would not be helpful," Brooks said when asked if South Korea should have its own nuclear weapons.
