44 percent say gun violence is related to easy access to firearms: poll

Source: The Hill

BY JULIA MANCHESTER - 03/29/21 11:45 AM EDT

Forty-four percent of Americans say most gun violence is related to easily accessible firearms, according to a new Harvard CAPS-Harris poll released exclusively to The Hill on Monday.

Another 29 percent of voters polled attributed gun violence to urban gangs, while 27 percent said mental illness was related to the violence.

The findings come as two mass shootings in Atlanta and Boulder this month reignited the long-running debate over gun control in the U.S. Eight people in the Atlanta area and 10 people in Boulder, Colo., were killed in the recent shootings.

President Biden urged Congress to pass meaningful gun reforms last week, while a number of other Democrats called for action on the issue, pointing to gun control.

1. All of the above

And they are not distinct and separate problems. They are all interrelated.

Gangs have guns because they are too easy to get.

Guns are too easy to get for people who have mental illness

Trying to simplify the problem for a poll result is not really helpful.

8. We can add 'militia' gangs, too

Not just urban.

21. Exactly. The poll is deliberately designed to hide the truth.

If respondents had been allowed to pick more than one answer, all but gun nuts would have answered that easy access to guns is an important factor.

2. An interesting thought

Found this online recently....

You know what amazes me? Women have access to guns every day and despite the way we are treated by society, by bosses, by men who claim to love us, we are not sending people bombs nor shooting up schools or churches with AR15s.

Take a lesson, men, and work on yourselves, not us.

End

I think something similar could be said for black folk.

6. There could be zero guns and men would still commit the vast majority of violence.

It's baked into the cake.

We're apes.

3. Poorly crafted poll lumps the many types as one 'gun violence' problem

Different types have different causes. Mass shootings, domestic violence, gang conflict, lone wolfs/mental are 4 very different types of causes that only overlap to varying degrees. We know what they mean by urban gangs, and by and large they are not involved in mass shootings.

10. True

But there is one thing that they all have in common...easy access to guns.

4. More cars on a freeway more accidents.

More pools in a community = more drownings.

More people in contact = more covid cases.

Why do more guns not = more shootings in gun supporter's minds?

11. We don't need any more redundant polls to tell us

There are TOO MANY GUNS in the U.S. Period.

5. A pathway forward is through exposure.

Rather than fight on the basis of 2nd amendment rights, gun laws, procedures, and all other worn and tired tracks, we can fight in a different arena. Go after the exposure. Stop television and film from showing true to life images of weapons, discourage or outlaw advertising, pass state and local laws forbidding signage that displays weapons or their branding. Do away with the billboards and street signs announcing where the next gun show is. None of this is protected by the 2nd amendment. We need to fight our fight.

7. Show the actual results of Gun Violence to the public.

Show the gore, the destroyed bodies, the blood. Shock the bourgeoisie. Make guns repugnant.

We did it to kids in Driver's Ed, but gun violence is sanitized in our media. It shouldn't be.

Whatever strategy works in a particular place is a good strategy. We must stop being the entertainment.

14. 44% is still a minority

The trick is to get more than 50% to agree than easy access to guns is a problem.

15. Mass shootings needs to be treated separately from urban gangs

since mass shooters purchase their guns legally and most would not know how to purchase it on the black market.

19. It's the same macho culture, just a different skin tone, language, and/or level of affluence.

Acquiring a gun is how some guys get their "man card," be it a 14 year old kid with a stolen gun or an affluent white 55 year old long term gun fetishist.

Discouraging macho gun culture and reducing the number of guns will reduce gun violence.

U.S.A. gun culture is every bit as vile as its racism and misogyny.

Our current interpretation of the second amendment is bullshit, just as Constitutional protections of slavery were bullshit.

18. Gun control advocates shouldn't spend money at stores that sell these things

Reminder:

Walmart still sells guns at most of their stores.
Dick's Sporting Goods still sells guns including some semi-automatic weapons.
Bass Pro Shops still sells AR-15.

Try not to let them get your money.
