Manchin Says He And '6 Or 7' Democrats Not Yet Behind Biden's Infrastructure Plan

Source: Forbes

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), a critical swing vote for Democrats, on Monday said he is not yet supportive of Biden’s initial $2 trillion infrastructure proposal, the latest sign that the plan faces an uphill battle.

In an interview with West Virginia radio host Hoppy Kercheval, Manchin said, “As the bill exists today, it needs to be changed,” homing in on an increase in the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28% – meant to pay for the infrastructure spending – saying he favors a 25% rate.

But Manchin did not rule out voting for it, noting it will “not be in the same form you’ve seen it introduced” when it passes Congress, suggesting it may be broken up into three separate bills.

Democrats will need Manchin’s vote to pass the bill in the Senate even if they use budget reconciliation, which would allow them to bypass the 10 Republicans needed to break a filibuster but still require all 50 Democrats in the chamber.

1. If all those Democrats oppose the bill

Why is it only Manchin's lips are flapping about it?

3. Why put yourself out there when Manchin can be the lightning rod?

He can kill it on his own. If there are others who don't support it then there is little reason to draw public attention to themselves. Let Manchin take the public beating.

5. Just like the kid who never had a date has a girl friend in Canada

It is more likely that there are 6 or 7 republikkkans who would vote for this because having this vote hang around their neck like an albatross would be bad in a general election than there are 6-7 Dems who would vote no.

Really.... roads are crumbling and bridges are in danger of collapsing

Water infrastructure where people go more than a month after a storm without having drinkable water (the deep south) or lead in the pipes.

Electrical grid -- I'm looking at you Texas and large portions of the south who can't handle a little ice or cold weather

Manchin either name names or you might as well be Rod from Avenue Q -- with your non-existent girlfriend in Canada

8. Is Sen. Manchin not intelligent enough to see

that the infrastructure proposal will get people back to work and create new jobs, therefore getting our economy
back on track which would result in more Democratic votes 2022?

25. Joe is

Our male Collins. I wish he would shut up. Mike Wallace asked if he was not enjoying his power a little too much. You can do that a couple of times, but when it becomes a habit soon gets old.

Anyone remember another Joe who caused us not to pass Universal health care? Or a Baucus? Both long gone.

Democrats have a good chance to correct many of our problems if we stick together. The Parliamentary ruling is really good for us.

20. Is Sen. Manchin not intelligent enough to see ... i say NO. he isn't intelligent enough.

Thinking about him and his whiner attitude depresses me to no end.

I hear President Biden Promoting the REBUILDING America.... and I think SUPERMAN !!!!

Then Manchin starts in whining and being all negative and I almost start to cry.
DEMS WANT TO GET STUFF DONE and Manchin is an albatross around our neck.

11. He could be right on some of it

There were a number of Democrats four years ago that agreed with lowering the corporate tax rate (though perhaps not to 21%). There are bound to be a few who don't want a significant increase right after the pandemic.

12. This program of Joe Biden's being murdered by GOP politicians. But by and large the GOP common ...

... rank and filers support almost every point when asked about them individually and with no reference to party.

This in my mind shows it's as bipartisan as anything we've heard in at least four years.

I think it'll happen pretty much the way Joe Biden says he'd like to have it.

13. The Democrats should consider courting some of the Republican Senators to get them on board.

Of course they will have to offer them a carrot to do so which in my opinion should consist of "You can get on board or we will gut all federal spending in your state like a fish".

16. Not for this one

I thought as much when all I knew was that it's an infrastructure bill. They were pushing for one under Trump and thus there should be at least a few that would support it.

But undoing much of the corporate tax change that they just put in place a few years ago - and large amounts that are not "infrastructure" by their understanding?

I don't see any of them supporting it without significant changes... and Manchin and his imagined 6-7 Democrats should come onboard long before Republicans will.

those states as well as making the Republicans squabble among themselves.

Removing funding involves passing a budget that does so... and that has to get past Manchin.

They need to put a shock collar on Manchin. And Ms Curtsy Sinema We need to elect more Dem Senators, I'm tired of Joe Manchin's wishy washy puddle jumping politics from one side to the other! Manchin will be sure to screw it up.

Pass voting rights reform and appoint judges before we run out of time! That’s what really matters. Some say it cannot be done with HR1 ...so get to the infrastructure...people need jobs and we need to repair these crumbling bridges, roads, railroad tracks, etc

McConnell is going around throwing empty threats at big business like an old man yelling at clouds.
