Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issues order prohibiting 'vaccine passports'

Source: The Hill

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Monday issued an executive order prohibiting so-called "vaccine passports," saying a system to track those who have been inoculated against COVID-19 infringes on citizens' rights.

*snip*

Abbott has come under heat in recent weeks for lifting of a statewide mask mandate and his handling of a major snowstorm that left residents without power and heat for days.

Another Republican, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, last week vowed to take similar executive action to prevent companies from requiring vaccine passports before providing services to customers.

*snip*

On Monday, Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, said the federal government will not mandate documentation of COVID-19 vaccinations.

22. I will mock Abbott

He's the guy who was injured in an accident, took full advantage of the law to sue and get damages because of his disabling injuries and then once in the lege, worked to change the law to remove that redress. He continually argues the ADA is unconstitutional.

He's a hypocrite and an asshole. I treat him the way he treats those with disabilities.

If it's a Republican, apparently race, gender, sexuality, and disability are fair game here.

26. So we're supposed to cut him slack

just BECAUSE he's disabled? Sorry, but NFW. I will treat him the same way I will treat an able bodied moron....savagely! That tree not only paralyzed him, it permanently did in whatever he had for a soul. He is a nasty, soulless, shriveled little excuse for a man, and I would say the same thing about him if he were walking around on two good legs, because so is his sidekick Dan Patrick, and so is his criminal AG, Ken Paxton...and they are both, AFAIK, able-bodied.

But don't mock him for being wheelchairbound, or blame his asshole-ness on his being disabled.

34. Well I think

He was probably always somewhat of an asshole, but when that tree fell on him, it not only paralyzed him, it killed whatever soul he had....because he allowed it to. So in a way, yeah. Some people DO let being disabled turn them into assholes, or worse assholes.

4. Abbot, why is that? Because we already do for anyone moving around...

We require it already:

Vaccinations

Important Notice to Immigrant Visa Applicants Concerning Vaccination Requirements

United States immigration law requires immigrant visa applicants to obtain certain vaccinations (listed below) prior to the issuance of an immigrant visa. Panel physicians who conduct medical examinations of immigrant visa applicants are required to verify that immigrant visa applicants have met the vaccination requirements, or that it is medically inappropriate for the visa applicant to receive one or more of the listed vaccinations:

Hepatitis A
Hepatitis B
Influenza
Influenza type b (Hib)
Measles
Meningococcal
Mumps
Pneumococcal
Pertussis
Polio
Rotavirus
Rubella
Tetanus and diphtheria toxoids
Varicella

5. Pointless GQP grandstanding

U.S. government is not ordering “vaccine passports.”
Private businesses are.
Other foreign governments are - to protect themselves from Americans. (Or more pointedly - Republicans.)

How is proof of vaccination a violation of “citizen’s rights “?
What “right”, specifically, would be violated?

So how is Texas going to enforce this crappola? Next thing you know they will be telling bakers they gave to bake wedding cakes to anyone and everyone! Freedumb!!!

33. we had to have our daughter's shot records when she started

school here. I still have them actually.

I had to have my shot records to live in the college dorm. Of course in 1966 there were far fewer vaccinations: smallpox, diphtheria/Pertussis/Tetanus, polio. Our Pediatrician gave us typhoid shots every 2 years because we had a well out in the country and you just never know what is going to fall in a sinkhole upstream somewhere.

I went to Germany and I had to show that shot record; I needed one more round - typhus (made me sicker than any other shot I ever had)

I had my last typhoid when I was a senior in high school.

I see no problem with having a card showing I had the shot just in case I need to show it.

6. At What Point Does Preempting Government "Tyranny"

become a form of government tyranny itself? Let the market decide if these "vaccine passports" have any validity. More examples of politicians making decisions for the people without their consent.

9. Banning things that don't exist...

There are no Vaccine passports. It's an idea that private sector has asked for. Abbott does not get to decide health risks for other people. Certainly not for private businesses who have an interest in protecting themselves from liability. Provided it's not discriminating on race, color, creed, gender, ethnicity, businesses CAN require those with active cases of Mumps, measles, typhoid to stay out, and those who want to come in to be vaccinated.

Norwegian Cruise Line is requiring proof of vaccination. Disney requires masks. As a customer, I want to know I'm safe there. As music venues, stage and theater open up, I want these places to require proof of vaccination. When mostly evangelical republican whites are denied access, it's not because of their color or religion, it's because they might carry deadly disease.

There are people who will not be able to get any of the vaccines because of allergic reactions--severe reactions, not arm irritation--or other serious medical conditions. "I don't want to be a guinea pig," "I want to see what the side effects are," this is nonsense. Besides rigorous clinical testing, Over 100,000,000 does have been administered. People aren't dropping dead of vaccine. Vaccinated people are not going to the hospital.

It's pure selfishness. Let other people get it, I don't want to be inconvenienced. I'm particularly horrified that health care personnel in nursing homes and assisted living places passed on their chance. Um, require it for employment, especially those working with old people, especially those with school age children who are carriers.

It goes back to the bullshit autism study that was poorly designed and thoroughly debunked. If the antivaxxers would simply congregate amongst themselves like the lepers they are and cull the herd of easily duped anti intellectuals, great, but they won't stay in their lanes.

Got my second pfizer jab this morning to protect myself and others, so we can all go back to spending quality time with loved ones.

Pandemic's not over, but lets open up anyway. Oh, by the way, you can't check to see if your customers are protected from getting/passing on the virus.

Republicanism, cherishing human life one tombstone at a time.

12. Well, all a business has to do is find out where they lived before (in TX would be their answer)

or worked (in TX would be their answer) and thus, make their hiring decision, into probably not a good decision for the job seeker.

Also, I suspect that this infringes upon the first amendment rights of people (limiting what people can say, what people can ask) but I don't know. HIV status at one time was handled like this, I thought, so a touchy area.

But I would be pissed off at the TX governor, and others, who seem hellbent on getting the rest of the Country sick too.

23. Greg, Ron and the rest of the GQP see this as a way to break the recovery and to present the image

of resisting Federal Authorities and institutional guidelines. Anything to make the Democrats fail, or to pretend to resist much like the bogus secession talk was last year, along with the "we don't need federal intervention" talk post Ice Storm or Post Hurricane.

The pretense is to generate doubt about federal institutions as a running commentary that they are not to be trusted.
