In the twilight of Donald Trumps administration, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) sought a preemptive pardon for any crimes he and his allies in Congress may have committed, The New York Times reports.
Gaetz is currently under federal investigation for potential sex trafficking in connection with an alleged relationship with a 17-year-old girl. The Department of Justice is also probing whether Gaetz paid multiple women for sex on various visits to Florida alongside his close ally Joel Greenberg, the now indicted former Seminole County tax collector. Gaetz has denied the allegations.
It is unclear if Gaetz or Trump knew of the investigation into the Florida congressman, but the White House declined anyway, believing a priori forgiveness would establish an unseemly precedent, according to the Times.

(153,138 posts)since WHEN was the Trump White House concerned about setting an "unseemly precedent"? Imagine how toxic Gaetz must be for a self-professed PUSSY GRABBER to find him distasteful.

(5,889 posts)I don't think there's any requirement for a public disclosure of a Presidential pardon, so maybe G***z has one from T***p and is keeping it under wraps. Either one is sleazy enough to do that.

(43,115 posts)That's a conundrum.
You can write a check on a piece of paper. A bank might accept it, probably will since they suspect something's amiss, then hold it for verification, some corroborating evidence, and investigate such.
If a fake pardon were presented in court .... ?
I'd like to think, and do think, courts would be skeptical and hold to real substantiating evidence. But these days .... with politicized judiciary ... ? Who knows.

(5,889 posts)How would you? Both Gaetz and T***p are sleazy enough to do it and stick to their story.

(14,168 posts)I suppose if it was more specific. "Any charges in relation to child sex trafficking"
Maybe that was the rub. No pun intended. 1. Gaetz thought Trump would steal another term. 2. He didn't want it to get out that he had a pocket pardon for an underage sex crime. 3. He, like many on the right, think they are invincible, and above the dirty white trash that support them.

(1,685 posts)When did Trumps White House think anything was unseemly?
Donnie boy simply did what he always did. He kicked Gaetz to the curb when he had no more use for him.

(43,115 posts)Pocket pardons would be held until useful, then attempted to be rushed through the court. And they wouldn't be secret if we knew about them.

(19,831 posts)And if Trump and Gaetz are both involved with the statutory rape situation you can see why Trump's lawyers would advise against pardoning.

(107,859 posts)Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday denied that Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) directly asked him for a blanket pardon, and appeared to defend the congressman amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
"Congressman Matt Gaetz has never asked me for a pardon," Trump said in a statement. "It must also be remembered that he has totally denied the accusations against him."
The New York Times reported on Tuesday that Gaetz asked White House officials for blanket pre-emptive pardons for himself and other congressional allies of Trump. The Times noted that it was not clear whether Gaetz directly addressed the matter with Trump, though aides were said to have relayed the request.
Gaetz - one of the former president's most vocal allies in Congress - is reportedly the subject of a Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into an alleged inappropriate relationship with a minor and a possible violation of sex trafficking laws.
