ATLANTA — The Georgia division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will not host its annual Confederate Memorial Day service at Stone Mountain Park this year.

The gathering was proposed to take place Saturday. But the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, the state authority that oversees management of the popular and divisive park, declined to grant the necessary permit.

In a letter dated March 31, memorial association CEO Bill Stephens listed three reasons for the denial. Foremost among them, Stephens cited an ordinance declaring large events should be denied if they create “a clear and present danger to public health or safety.”

“With the volatile nature of events of the immediate past and ongoing today, there is a clear and present danger to members of the (Sons of Confederate Veterans), potential counterprotesters, park employees and guests,” Stephens wrote.

2. I'm just a bit torn on this one.

I don't want to see the govt stopping the right to assemble (we'll be next), but I loathe those who wave that banner, especially here in the north. The article cites a security problem and that they can't afford to protect the attendees or counter protestors alike. The chance that it will be a super spreader event may be a better reason.

I'm not sure how I feel about this at first glance.

4. at one time

I spent my late springs and summer down in the valley from that Confederate meeting place. The night before events such as these in the house by dark for sure. The days preceding events such as these were the day of hate, intimidation and humiliation. Having to hide because these idiots were on their high horse of American racism. Has kept going strong 1619-present day.

5. There should be no government support of gatherings that celebrate the Confederacy. Period.

12. I used the wrong terminology

I meant something along the lines of incitement to violence or fighting words. I have a hard time differentiating between hate speech and fighting words.
