Biden will withdraw all U.S. forces from Afghanistan by Sept. 11, 2021

President Biden will withdraw all American troops from Afghanistan over the coming months, people familiar with the plans said, completing the military exit by the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that first drew the United States into its longest war.

The decision, which Biden is expected to announce on Wednesday, will keep thousands of U.S. forces in the country beyond the May 1 exit deadline that the Trump administration negotiated last year with the Taliban, according to one person familiar with the matter, who like others spoke on condition of anonymity to describe plans that are not yet public.

While the Taliban has vowed to renew attacks on U.S. and NATO personnel if foreign troops are not out by the deadline, it is not clear if the militants will follow through with those threats given Bidenís plan for a phased withdrawal between now and September.

1. I'm of 2 minds about this.

We're obviously not going to change Afghanistan into a peaceful multiparty democracy through force, and 20 years of occupation is absurd.

What will happen when we leave and the Taliban reclaim control will be awful and Medieval, in particular for women. We will have to open our doors to 100s of 1000s of refugees from non-Pashtun ethnic minorities, Shiites, and former government officials, police, soldiers, translators, & intellectuals.

Fuck you George W. Bush.

3. Yes, it's past time.

And time to close Guantanamo, leave Iraq, etc.

The human cost will be terrible; I think that plays a role in Obama's reluctance to act more aggressively to leave during his term. Also, Republicans are a bunch of dicks who put very obstacle they could in the way.

15. Biden must have learned a lot about what Obama could and could not accomplish there. It's

another reason to appreciate him even more. I'm not saying it's any extension of Obama's administration, just that he has a firm foundation to help him make decisions. I am thrilled beyond belief at what Biden is accomplishing. He is wise and deeply informed and he is a good man, like Obama. Biden is the best thing that could happen to us!

10. Both parties supported the Afghan invasion.

Almost unanimously. Including H. Clinton as a Senator and Obama who called Afghanistan "the good war" as president.
We should have withdrawn after the Taliban were overthrown and let the Afghan people deal with their own country.

11. I supported killing the F out of OBL at Tora Bora.

There was clearly a case for intervention against Al Queda, but I expected competence and sound strategy.

Overthrowing the Taliban, less of a clear case. They've always been supported, at least tacitly, by Pakistan's ISI. There's zero chance the ISI didn't know and allow OBL to hide in Abbottabad for a decade.

5. We could have annihilated the terrorist training camps in Afghanistan

and had the troops home by Christmas of 2002.

Instead, the corrupt Cheney-Bush cabal invaded the wrong country.

7. And deploy them to the backyards of targeted Republican members of Congress.

And do maneuvers with live ammo.

9. This was inevitable as the US could not stay there forever

At least the withdrawal will be planned and competent. Perhaps the rest of the world can engage the taliban constructively now.

16. Locking

The consensus of forum hosts is that reports of events that are expected to happen should be posted in General Discussion, and that the LBN forum is reserved for reports of the actual events, themselves, since only one thread is allowed in LBN per news item. Put another way, as a general rule, anticipatory news should be posted in GD.

Thanks!
