U.S. imposes sweeping sanctions targeting Russian economy

The Biden administration announced it will sanction dozens of Russian officials and entities, expel 10 diplomats from the U.S., and set new restrictions on buying sovereign debt in response to the massive SolarWinds hack of federal agencies and interference in the 2020 election.
Why it matters: The sweeping acts of retaliation are aimed at imposing heavy economic costs on Russia, after years of sanctions that have failed to deter an increasingly aggressive and authoritarian President Vladimir Putin.
Details: The administration formally accused Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of carrying out the SolarWinds hack, which Microsoft President Brad Smith has called "the largest and most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen." The intelligence community said it has "high confidence" in the assessment.
The package of sanctions will bar U.S. banks from buying Russian government bonds directly from the the country's central bank, sovereign wealth fund and ministry of finance beginning June 14, complicating Russia's ability to raise money in international capital markets.

(4,372 posts)I dunno, maybe a good show. Seems like I've heard sanction programs
against the russkys for years. Other than starving the people, who are
really powerless imho, to do much. Military might get really down on
them...

(840 posts)on sanctions and laws concerning Russia and allowing American Business (pretty much since Buss II) to freely support the Russian Mafia, I believe (without proof) that we have created more (hidden) billionaires in Russia than America. And that's saying something!

Russia and China have stolen, or copied their own versions of our innovations.
This is the Biden hammer -- the beat back for all these years of Putin's advanced persistent insurgency threat -- the opposite of the traitor who'd have handed over every single thing of value in America to Putin, who himself would have let China partner in on the steal.

(972 posts)Really more of warning shot. There was a lot more we could do but these are watered down to serve more as warning. The sanctions only target new debt issuance which Russia does not rely that heavily on international investors for new issuance of government bonds. Also no additional sanction on the pipeline with Germany.
We've been sanctioning Russia since 2014 with really minimal results to show for it. They still do whatever they want.

(107,900 posts)Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday said that Moscow will request for 10 U.S. diplomats to leave the country in response to a slew of sanctions the Biden administration announced against the country.
According to Lavrov, Russia is also set to sanction eight U.S. officials and prevent U.S. non-government organizations from interfering in the country's politics, The Associated Press reported.
He also stated that while Russia could move to take "painful measures" against American businesses in the country, it is not currently acting on that.
The move comes after President Biden signed an executive order blocking American financial institutions from lending funds to or purchasing bonds from Russia's Central Bank, National Wealth Fund or Ministry of Finance after June 14 of this year.
