Mine workers union endorses Biden energy policies in exchange for job training

Source: NBC News

WASHINGTON — The United Mine Workers of America leadership announced Monday they support President Joe Biden’s green energy policies in exchange for a robust transition strategy, a move by the union they hope their membership will support as a way to transition toward new jobs.

Fearing further regulations from the Biden administration, the UMWA is pleading with Congress to invest in the industry by allocating funds to training and “good paying jobs” with benefits in renewable energy sectors for miners dislocated by the changes. Senator Joe Manchin, D-WV., the chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, is joining the union for their announcement Monday morning.

“We’re trying to, first of all, insert ourselves to the extent that we can in this conversation because our people, a lot of coal miners in this country their families have suffered already some traumatic losses,” UMWA President Cecil Roberts told NBC.

For many miners, it’s going to be a hard sell.

2. Joe Biden knows what he's doing, and he knows how to operate...

in the Senate. He's working on Manchin. Yesterday I posted what's below.

Joe's got to smooze Manchin with shovel-ready, infrastructure projects...

with good jobs that put out-of-work coal miners first in line for hiring. He should put Sec'y Pete in charge to come up with not just roads, bridges and tunnels, but green energy projects which can be models for energy projects all over the country.

Make W. Va the infrastructure lab for the nation as the Tennessee Valley Project did for that state and region in FDR's New Deal. I imagine Manchin, who obviously loves to be the center of attention, will love that he and his state will be the center of the nation's attention.

It can work and Sec'y Pete has the persuasive way with words to do it.

3. A hard sell is right.

They already rejected job re-training under President Obama, and believed a sleazy real-estate huckster with a history of fraud when he told them that he would bring mining jobs back.

Unless President Biden has a jackhammer powerful enough to penetrate their thick skulls, he won't be able to convince them...

5. Manchin is in on it. He's going to be there with the union to announce it.

His vote is what we need in the Senate. Joe is smoozing him with energy projects for his state to replace vanishing coal mining jobs.

Getting Manchin on board to to get the infrastructure bill passed is key. Once it's passed and the training and projects get started, the voters will come along. Just as they have for the relief bill which got money in their pockets.

10. This is very promising.

I enjoy taking a drive to a dam and lake somewhere in Appalachia. What was done by the TVA is quite impressive. I hate the thought of all of the people who were displaced though.

I also enjoy driving past a very large solar array. I would love to see a mega-battery site or a large wind turbine field some day as well.

I personally quit my IT job of nearly 20 years to re-train in the electrical field so that I can move to a renewable energy job in the future. I'm in my 3rd year as an electrician and should migrate to a solar installation position within a year or so. It's going to be very fulfilling.
