15 Republican senators vow to swear off earmarks amid intra-GOP tension

Source: Politico

Fifteen Senate Republicans on Monday pledged to uphold their party's decade-long ban on earmarks, drawing a battle line days before the GOP is set to vote on whether to reinstate the spending practice.

In a letter obtained by POLITICO, the group — led by conservative Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) — made clear they are “committed” to the earmark ban and “will not vote to repeal it.”

“We will not participate in an inherently wasteful spending practice that is prone to serious abuse,” the lawmakers wrote.

The anti-earmark letter includes a diverse mix of lawmakers, illustrating that the opposition to so-called "congressionally directed spending" spans the ideological spectrum in the GOP. Among the signatories: Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), an ally of Minority Leader Mitch McConnell; Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), a potential 2024 contender who challenged certification of the election results; Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a member of GOP leadership; Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), who voted to convict former President Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial; and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a libertarian Trump ally.

2. Idiots will never get anything passed...makes one wonder why in the hell are they even

participating in this whole process, if they won't even be open to give or take, during the whole legislative process?

Maybe it's time to replace every single one of them w/ people who do in fact, care about being legislators, being responsible citizens, doing good things for this Country, etc.?

6. There's nothing wrong with earmarks...they assist in a functioning legislative process

and connect members more closely to their constituents. It is a GOP-Libertarian myth that earmarks are wasteful or corrupt.

7. Idiots....

Earmarks are the grease that makes our government work. Of course, they really don't want our government to work. They want to replace it with a Jebus kleptocracy. I hate those people with the heat of a 1,000 suns.

8. Their constituents must be thrilled

"Vote for me and I promise to bring not one thin dime to our district!"
"Except for my well earned salary of course".

So easy to spot the rookies.
