One person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting Tuesday morning at a Stop & Shop in West Hempstead, and police were in active pursuit of the suspected gunman, who they identified as a store employee who fled after the shooting, authorities said.
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, speaking from the scene, said the man killed was approximately 49 years old. The two others who were shot are hospitalized and "conscious and alert" and speaking to detectives, Ryder said.
Ryder identified a "person of interest" in the fatal shooting as Gabriel DeWitt Wilson, 31, of either Long Beach or Hempstead, who witnesses said was armed with a small handgun. Ryder said Wilson "was or still may be an employee of the Stop & Shop."
