The shooting happened just minutes before a guilty verdict was announced in the trial of Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer who killed George Floyd.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was on the scene Tuesday night on the 3100 block of Legion Lane, between Chatterton and Refugee roads to investigate a fatal shooting by a Columbus police officer.
Police received a 911 call at 4:35 p.m. about an attempted stabbing on the 3100 block of Legion Lane, which is located north of Chatterton Road. The caller reported a female was trying to stab them, then the caller hung up.

(14,007 posts)"County statistics:Franklin County has one of highest rates of fatal police shootings in Ohio and the U.S.
Hazel Bryant told The Dispatch that she is the aunt of the 15-year-old girl who was shot. The girl lived in a foster home there on Legion Lane and got into an altercation with someone else at the home, she said.
Bryant said her niece had a knife, but maintained that the girl dropped the knife before she was shot multiple times by a police officer.
Protests develop at shooting scene
Demonstrators gather at the corner of Templar Street and Legion Lane following a fatal police shooting on Columbus' southeast side.
Protesters with Black Lives Matter signs, megaphones and a loudspeaker joined the crowd gathered behind crime scene tape about a half-block away from the shooting scene. About 50 people had gathered by 8:30 p.m.
"We don't get to celebrate nothing," K.C. Taynor said through a megaphone of the Chauvin verdict. "...In the end, you know what, you can't be Black."

(12,492 posts)This is how trouble gets started. WRONG information
The best possible thing the city could have done was release that video.

(2,156 posts)The cop had a split-second choice between shooting the assailant or allowing the young lady in pink to be wounded or killed.
A horrible situation for everyone involved.

(10,136 posts)to a lethal attack. The age of the lethal attacker is virtually never important, while the size of attacker can be very important.
Non-lethal force is used against non-lethal attacks.

(39,171 posts)too far away for a taser. The girl was in the act of stabbing that other girl - he had a fraction of a second to act. No time for anything else.

(12,492 posts)Anyone protesting this is just a troublemaker. WATCH that video; shes about to plunge the knife into someone when the cops fires.
NOTHING else he could do at that moment; he may have saved that persons life

(12,492 posts)She's in the act of trying to stab someone AT THAT MOMENT. He stopped her from doing that. He did his job.
I remember the Chauvin defense team constantly bringing up "what happened before...". It doesnt matter if George Floyd had a GUN "before". He was no longer a threat when he was killed.
THIS girl was actively trying to stab someone.

(14,007 posts)ready to shoot. If his aim had been wrong, the girl in pink would be dead too.
The officer was not in danger.
Defending what MIGHT have happened to the second girl is pretty weak.
His training should have DE escalated the situation.
This sure looks like another cold blooded murder by cop.
White girls? Different outcome.

You can de-escalate a murder in progress.

(18,497 posts)Had the cop tried talking her down and maybe attempted to physically restrain the girl with the knife but the other girl was stabbed in the process, she bleeds out on the way to the hospital and dies.
What would you say about the cops choice of action?

(5,274 posts)She was in act of stabbing the other girl in the neck, what exactly should he have done?

(1,568 posts)Very unfortunate situation, but I'm not sure what else could have been done.
I'd be interested in hearing ideas how they would have handled it from anyone who feels this was completely unjustified. My brain might be too simple to conceptualize those ideas myself.

(839 posts)looks like it was the right call. If I was the victim, i'm glad the girl was shot before the knife stabs me.

(8,698 posts)look not all things that happen are alike. There's a lot of good policemen.
There were good policemen in that trial that came out and said that it was wrong and basically murder.
