Brazil wants U.S. to pay not to raze Amazon

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration has suggested it would reduce deforestation to the Amazon rainforest if the Biden administration pays the country $1 billion.

Brazil’s environment minister, Ricardo Salles, told the Wall Street Journal that a third of the $1 billion would be used to fund specialized police forces so environmental laws can be enforced.

Illegal activity against the Amazon rainforest is common with parcels of the rainforest even being listed for sale on Facebook.

The rest of the money is intended to go toward ways to provide alternatives to poor farmers who slash and burn land so they can continue to make a living, Salles said, the Wall Street Journal reported.

15. Holding the Amazon for ransom

He could care less about the forest and its ramifications for the planet. Like trump, he's all about what's in it for him.

We can't afford the trillions he'd want. At the same time, the planet can't afford not to. The only way it might work would be if this were a global effort to buy it, multi-national policing, and monitoring that the money goes to the Brazilian people.

20. Over the past 30-40 years, there's been efforts to protect the Amazon rain forest from being cut

down, and thus, in reality what has really happened? The clear cutting has continued. The forest is still being cut down. Nothing worked in the past. What makes this idiot think that any recent new efforts will work now? I think that this is a scam to get more money, nothing else.
