Brazil wants U.S. to pay not to raze Amazon

Source: The Hill

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration has suggested it would reduce deforestation to the Amazon rainforest if the Biden administration pays the country $1 billion.

Brazil’s environment minister, Ricardo Salles, told the Wall Street Journal that a third of the $1 billion would be used to fund specialized police forces so environmental laws can be enforced.

Illegal activity against the Amazon rainforest is common with parcels of the rainforest even being listed for sale on Facebook.

The rest of the money is intended to go toward ways to provide alternatives to poor farmers who slash and burn land so they can continue to make a living, Salles said, the Wall Street Journal reported.

2. Sure Jair....

But, you will earmark ALL of it for protections for the rainforest and aid. You will let us put an oversight group there to watch how it is spent and you will give us concessions for doing so. Otherwise, eat a big one and get ready, because once you 'Nero' those poor people enough, they are going to rise up and remove your sorry, greedy ass, along with anyone who dares say your name. Hope you are ready for it, because it is gonna happen soon, I can sense it.

Because once you pay, they'll be back for more.

6. Of course they do. EVERYONE wants US to pay for whatever.

OK, we'll supply the money. And the Amazon rainforest becomes protected property of the US government

21. Everyone wants the US to pay for things but also

“Mind their own business”. People quickly forget that if you keep asking favours you end up beholden.

9. My takeaway:

1) Bolsonaro is an extortionist thug looking for money to fund his army of fascist brownshirts.

2) Facebook is facilitating criminal activity and aiding and abetting in the destruction of our planet.

with something ya know. how about sattalite surveillance,

drones for close up and targeting of logging trucks

disabling them so no one will drive them cuz they will be

stranded . then take him to a international court for blackmail

of the planet ... on earth day no less. I can dream

12. Here's a better idea...

Let's just invade.

And give Bolsonaro the "Noriega" treatment.

It's not like we've NEVER done that ...EVER.....

22. Absolutely...

But somehow I think "ONE" billion is more like a line from Austin Powers than a real offer.

I would much prefer the Argentine Nazi live out his days in Guantanamo....

13. I think we give him a billion$$$ but only if we buy the Amazon outright and own it for that money...

... it's ours and we make it the 53rd state. I think that would be fair enough and a righteous deal.

15. Holding the Amazon for ransom

He could care less about the forest and its ramifications for the planet. Like trump, he's all about what's in it for him.

We can't afford the trillions he'd want. At the same time, the planet can't afford not to. The only way it might work would be if this were a global effort to buy it, multi-national policing, and monitoring that the money goes to the Brazilian people.

We can dream.....

20. Over the past 30-40 years, there's been efforts to protect the Amazon rain forest from being cut

down, and thus, in reality what has really happened? The clear cutting has continued. The forest is still being cut down. Nothing worked in the past. What makes this idiot think that any recent new efforts will work now? I think that this is a scam to get more money, nothing else.
