Pelosi: Jan. 6 commission must focus only on insurrection

Source: The Hill

BY MIKE LILLIS - 04/22/21 01:10 PM EDT

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that she's yielded to certain GOP demands surrounding the creation of a 9/11-style commission to investigate the Jan. 6 rampage at the Capitol, but she's sticking to at least one Democratic stipulation: the probe, she said, must focus on that singular event.

"The scope is what is important," she said during a press briefing in the Capitol.

Since the Capitol attack, leaders of both parties, in both chambers, have endorsed the concept of creating an independent commission consisting of outside experts to investigate the episode. Yet they've been at odds over at least three aspects of the panel: its composition, its powers to subpoena witnesses and the breadth of its inquiry.

Pelosi this week conceded on the first two points. She scrapped her initial proposal to empower Democrats with choosing seven of the 11 commission members, trimming the number to eight panelists with each party choosing four. And she amended her initial proposal governing witnesses, requiring both the chair and the vice-chair — or a simple majority of the evenly split panel — to endorse subpoenas before they're issued.

But I’m sure there’s politicking involved that makes sense of this.

with all the concessions, but not surprising. If the situation was reversed, the RepubliCONS would have been on the attack 24/7 since January 6th demanding hearings, a special prosecutor, resignation/censure/expulsion of offending Dem office holders, and their media machine would be laser focused on this event (they've already managed to convince a significant number of their supporters that it actually was "antifa' and "BLM" who plotted and were responsible for the attack). Most of the Dem leadership doesn't seem to have the stomach for this type of engagement and simply like to avoid as much unpleasantness as possible. Consequently, the RepubliCONS recognize this vulnerability, exploit the weakness to their advantage (especially with propaganda), and once again win the messaging game. Quite frankly, fuck the "seeking bipartisanship" because it's a losing approach in our contemporary politics. Only the Dems try to promote this cooperative approach while the other side only seeks absolute domination. Wake up!

9. Disappointed? Nancy may simply be acknowledging the inevitable disappointment of the commission.

Everyone knows already what took place there on January 6th. It's just that half of them know something 180 degrees different from the other. The whole Chinese fire drill exercise will, by default, leave the nations political palate crying for substance just as did the Mueller report. The opposition will not ask honest questions nor accept honest answers. No profound, universal and undeniable truths will be revealed. There will be only 6 PM grandstanding, news-cycle snapping and nipping from the regular crowd of QOP mouthpieces. The Democrats will be framed as counterpoint while they attempt to straighten the record. No silver bullets here.

Until 2022, when more QOP are shown the door, we can, at best, hope to keep the wolves of social collapse at bay. As we approach that date progressives must maintain the attack mode, taking heart from incremental victories in these remaining battles.

And the GOP is successful, Nancy might borrow from Susan Collins, and be very concerned.

Do you imagine that she would have made concessions she didn’t have to make? Easy to take pot shots

But I suspect that the GOP in the same position would fight. I don’t expect her to win all the time, but I expect the Dems to fight.

“Easy to take pot shots”... no, but tired of taking the blows.
