U.S. to share up to 60 million doses of AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine with other countries

The United States will share up to 60 million doses of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine with other countries amid rising pressure to help vaccinate the global population as cases spike across the world, according to a White House official.

The AstraZeneca vaccine, which is not yet authorized for use in the U.S. by the Food and Drug Administration, will be sent to other countries once it clear federal safety reviews. The White House is expected to make the announcement on Monday afternoon.

As vaccine supply begins to outweigh demand in the United States, the country is entering the next frontier in the fight against coronavirus: the need to vaccinate the global population against the virus and what role it should play in that effort. China and Russia have actively shared vaccines with neighboring countries and the developing world, raising concerns about the country’s adversaries making inroads amid waning American influence abroad.

The situation in India, where new record global daily covid cases have been set in recent days, is especially dire. On Sunday, the National Security Council announced the United States would send India raw materials to help manufacture coronavirus vaccines, therapeutics to treat covid patients, rapid test kits, ventilators and protective equipment for medical staff. The U.S. is also looking to provide oxygen supply.
