India declines UN's offer of assistance from integrated supply chain, says it has 'robust system'

Source: The Hindu

India has declined assistance offered by the United Nations of its integrated supply chain for COVID19-related material, saying the country has a "robust system" to deal with the required logistics, a spokesperson for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said.

"One of the things we did is we offered the assistance of our integrated supply chain if it was required. We've been told at this point that it's not needed because India has a reasonably robust system to deal with this. But our offer stands, and we're willing to help in whatever way we can," Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Chief, said in response to a question by PTI.

On whether any shipments of essential materials from UN agencies are expected to reach India amid the crisis, Mr Haq said, "none have been sought so far, but like I said, we do have people, including our people who deal with operational and logistical issues who are willing to help, if we're needed, and we're in touch with our counterparts in India to see whether that will be useful."

As India battles a crippling surge in COVID-19 infections and deaths, the United Nations has been in touch at various levels with authorities in India.

1. Fascist pig playbooK: no matter how dire the situation or how high the death toll

as long as nobody knows about it, everything's OK. Dumdum sure as hell did it. Now Modi is trying to get away with the same thing.

It's not going to work any better for him than it did for Dumdum.

2. Nationalism is failing badly

blaming foreigners for a pandemic doesn't work as well when numbers shoot up after hosting superspreader political rallies.

4. We already know how to deny service to our political enemies. We don't need you exposing that.

6. It appears India has their version of Trump in Modi, just as

Brazil has their Bolsonaro.

Saw a great article in The Guardian by Arundhati Roy on India's Covid disaster.

"That same day, in the Delhi high court, Tushar Mehta, India’s solicitor general, speaking for the government of India, said: 'Let’s try and not be a cry baby … so far we have ensured that no one in the country was left without oxygen.'”

7. Interesting how poorly autocratic rulers have done with the pandemic...

Trump, Brazil's bozo Bolsonaro, India's Modi, Putin with Russia's suspect count...
Viktor Orbán in Hungary, Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines used it as an excuse to widen their powers.

8. "an excuse to widen their powers"

Yes. But Dumbf never used it. He could have used Covid to make a huge power grab, but shunted it off to the States instead.

9. Election coming on and his innate ineptitude as a leader held him back.

It was pretty clear his emperor-sans-clothes act was wearing thin,
that he was unfit, that there was no policy, no plan.
Still he came close to winning the election; that's what seems baffling to me.

I think it was covid that was at the heart of the defeat. He couldn't lead and the crop of repubs around him couldn't organize a bakesale much less an epidemic response.
