Police in Northern California released bodycam video that shows officers pinning a man to the ground for more than five minutes during an arrest that ended in his death. The footage of the incident shows officers putting their weight onto Mario Arenales Gonzalez, then doing chest compressions after he became unresponsive.
The bodycam video, released late Tuesday, shows the struggle between Gonzalez, 26, and police in Alameda County last week. Gonzalez died on April 19, the day before former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering George Floyd by pinning him to the ground for over nine minutes.
The initial press release from the Alameda Police said that officers attempted to detain Gonzalez, and a "physical altercation ensued." Police said that Gonzalez then had a "medical emergency."
When the Alameda Fire Department arrived at the scene, they transported Gonzalez to a local hospital, where he later died, police said. According to the report, Gonzalez allegedly appeared to be under the influence and was a suspect in a possible theft.

Here is the youtube video: Warning. He dies in a similar manner as George Floyd. It is extremely disturbing and sad. I am so disgusted! This did NOT have to happen.

(736 posts)One minute he's talking and doesn't look armed, and isn't threatening anyone. The next he's dead. What the hell kind of country are we living in?!?

(8,052 posts)were restraining him improperly, I think he just had a cardiac event from struggling with them.

(20,568 posts)his groaning that they thought was resistance was actually Mario reacting to the pain of the possible cardiac event.

(8,052 posts)seemed aware that they had to be careful not to overdo it and harm him. I don't think this is a clear-cut case of police abuse, unless more comes out than what we see here. Will have to see where the investigation goes. It's unfortunate.

(8,052 posts)like take his hands out of pockets, etc. and he was not complying very well. It's possible he was just high/drunk/low blood sugar/mentally out of it, but I'm not sure what the laws are in CA for the police to just leave him there and walk away, vs. trying to get him medical attention, vs. trying to arrest for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct, and so on. Again I would reserve judgment until the full story is known, to decide how much (if at all) they deviated from proper procedure here.

(4,568 posts)just to go out there and fuck up as many people as they can. Christ Almighty, I was an infantryman in combat and we had a very strong emphasis to protect the lives of civilians. The problem with police is they see every person on the street as an enemy combatant and think of themselves as some kind of soldier, not a civilian police officer.
