Olympia Dukakis, late-blooming Oscar winner for 'Moonstruck,' dies at 89

Source: Washington Post

Olympia Dukakis, a versatile actress who toiled in obscurity onstage for decades before her Oscar-winning breakthrough at 56 as Cher’s sardonic mother in the romantic comedy “Moonstruck,” died May 1 at her home in New York City. She was 89.

The death was confirmed by her representative, Allison Levy, who did not specify the cause.

“Moonstruck” (1987) — about the exasperation, disappointment and unpredictability of love — was a light comedic showcase for Cher, Nicolas Cage, Danny Aiello, Vincent Gardenia and Ms. Dukakis as Brooklynites in the throes of agony and ecstasy.

As the tart-tongued matriarch Rose Castorini, Ms. Dukakis suffers the infidelity of her neglectful husband (played by Gardenia), a prosperous plumbing contractor, and finds herself the object of the sexual fascination of a womanizing professor (John Mahoney), whose momentary ardor she gently tames.

2. This is the moment when I realized that she was only 56 when she was in Moonstruck,

about the same age I am now. I still think they aged her up a bit to play Cher’s mother, though. In real life she was 15 when Cher was born.

RIP, Ms. Dukakis!

6. She had some of the best lines in that movie!

"You're a little boy and you like to be bad."
"I want you to know, you're gonna die."
"Old man if you feed that to the dogs, I'll kick you till you're dead."
A friend and I drove an entire party nuts for about 20 minutes quoting that movie. It's still my favorite of all time.

Memory eternal.

13. Wow. R.I.P. When I first saw the headline for some reason I thought "Olympia Snowe"

She was excellent in "Moonstruck" and sorry to see this. Thank you for your body of work and condolences to the family.

14. I am NOT being callous here, I sincerely believe. I've thought about this before typing it.

But...at age 89, how important is the COD? She might have simply been tired of life and just given up. My mil and aunt are the same age - 92 - and are both at that point.

She had what she probably thought was a wonderful life, and it was certainly a long one. I think she did, anyway.

16. And a cousin of Michael Dukaksi

From the link in the OP

At the Academy Awards ceremony in 1988, she used the platform to promote the presidential prospects of her cousin, then-Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis (“Okay, Michael, let’s go!”). He later received the Democratic nomination, in what they both called the “year of the Dukakii.”

17. I just found out she lived a block away from where I live, and went to our High School!

I must have moved here shortly after she graduated and moved on.

Rest In Peace, dear neighbor.

(I also met and worked on the Mike Dukakis campaign way back when.)

18. The wonderful Ms. Anna Madrigal in Tales of the City

if you don't know what I am talking about, track it down, either in book or miniseries format. Worth it.
