SAN DIEGO (AP) — Three people were killed and more than two dozen others were hospitalized after a wooden boat capsized Sunday during a possible human smuggling operation just off the San Diego coast, authorities said.

Local lifeguards, the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies responded around 10:30 a.m. following reports of an overturned vessel near the peninsula of Point Loma, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Three people died at the scene and 27 people were transported to hospitals with “varying degrees of injuries,” department spokesman Jose Ysea said.

Ysea said when he arrived on scene near the Cabrillo National Monument there was a “large debris field” of broken wood and other items in the choppy waters.

1. Boat was overloaded with undocumented migrants.

This isn't the first time a boat from Mexico let people off in Pt. Loma area -usually, they try to make for either the area around Nazarene College or up between Pacific Beach and La Jolla or further North so the passengers can split up and disappear quickly in the various neighborhood areas, but when the weather is choppy, the waters near the Point and lighthouse are treacherous.

A 40 ft. Cabin Cruiser with 30 people onboard would not be able to handle the onshore swells close in; they would have been safer to head out a mile off shore and make for Carlsbad and the lagoon areas before trying to beach the boat - but they would have further risked detection from the Border Patrol or Coast Guard.

Apparently they had been hiding out with the day fishing charters to make their way to the Point and had not been detected yet.

Sad all around that people feel they have to take such risks for work or sanctuary.

2. I wish we could help improve other places so even if they have problems it's not so bad that people

risk their lives in these ways to try to get to other places with no gaurantee they would be able to stay even if they made it.
