OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) A bystander jumped over a highway guard rail and into a Maryland bay Sunday to rescue a child who had been thrown from a car and into the water during a crash, according to authorities.
The child was ejected from a car on the Route 90 bridge in Ocean City and landed in the Assawoman Bay, the Ocean City Fire Department said in a statement. At least eight people were injured in total, the agency said.
Authorities were called to the scene just before 3 p.m. and discovered one car hanging off the side of the bridge, according to officials. Three other cars were involved in the crash, authorities said.
Firefighters secured the vehicle and paramedics treated multiple patients. Seven people were taken to hospitals in ambulances, and the child was flown to John Hopkins Childrens Center in Baltimore, according to the fire department.

(46,909 posts)A family member is Jewish and I attended Friday night synagogue services for a couple of years.
The blessing is about the unnamed heroes of the world, who are in unmarked graves who have saved us, made our lives better, increased our goodness and well-being. And made the world a better place.
It was one of my favorite passages because we said a prayer for all of these heroes.
I am Irish Catholic but I loved the prayers and singing at the synagogue.
The rabbi, a woman, gave the best damn sermons I have ever heard.
She had us eating out of her hand every Friday night.

I used to have tears in my eyes during this prayer.
The unmarked graves of heroes floated above my head as
we prayed!

(46,909 posts)The article made it sound like the Bay was just in front of the hero, like he only had to wade in to get the child.
But that is certainly not the case, this was a very dangerous and selfless heroic rescue.

The bystander is a hero and risked serious injury to rescue that kid.

(6,509 posts)The fact that he/she even saw the car seat go over the side is a miracle. What courage! I'm gonna think about this for a long time.
At certain moments, you shuck off everything you think you are, set it all aside, for somebody else. What a display of naked courage. Absolutely amazing!
