A Texas hospital system will require employees to get the Covid-19 vaccine and could fire them

Houston Methodist, a network of eight hospitals that has 26,000 employees, said it will require every employee to provide proof of vaccination by June 7.
If employees aren't vaccinated before the June deadline, they'll be suspended, without pay, for two weeks. If they're not vaccinated within that suspension period, the company will "initiate the employee termination process," according to the company's new HR policy, implemented this month.
"As health care workers we must do everything possible to keep our patients safe and at the center of everything we do," Houston Methodist CEO Dr. Marc Bloom told employees in an email obtained by CNN. "By choosing to be vaccinated, you are leaders -- showing our colleagues in health care what must be done to protect our patients, ourselves, our families and our communities."

(9,137 posts)But, the GOP fuckwits in the lege will probably pass a law making this job requirement illegal.
You know it's coming.

(5,065 posts)She's required to get a flu shot every year. (And she ran for the head of the line, rejoicing, when they offered Covid vaccines.) Certainly anyone who works in any kind of healthcare should be vaccinated.
I was shocked when my chiropractor said he wouldn't. Now looking for a new one. Asking my dentist today.

(5,065 posts)When they said no, I said I'd wait until everyone was, and the receptionist said the doctor wouldn't be getting it, so I said I wouldn't be coming in. Since he answers only to himself, I'm not sure he'll care, but I do intend to ask every healthcare provider I go to. When I think of the trouble everyone else has had getting a vaccination, I get really angry when the first people in line won't.
catrose
(5,065 posts)About 60-40% the receptionist said, "And you know it's not mandatory." I said because I have so many fragile people in my family, I didn't want to go to an office that wasn't fully vaccinated. I rescheduled for a month out--and I'll ask the same question the week before I go, when they start bothering you about confirmation.

Sorry, no mask, no service. If I saw staff at an office unmasked, vaccinated or not, I would RUN the other way.
Unmasked medical workers are committing malpractice, IMO.

(5,719 posts)It was at night (10:30 pm) and there were very few patients around, but I was shocked that over half the staff I saw were walking around or working without masks. This was long before the vaccine, and at the time, B.C. had very few Covid cases, but this was a health care setting and they were being very lackadaisical about the virus. Thing have changed as we had a large spike starting a couple of months ago.

(4,980 posts)Was my go to for the weirder care Ive needed over the years. Methodist is legendary in Houston broadly respected.
They have done a stellar job vaccinating existing patients. Rave reviews from the many I know that went to them for their vaccine. Has made the prospect of going to their doctors and facilities a safer endeavor. Doesnt surprise me in the least they are holding their own employees to high standards.
Is a huge, well-run system, and of course its in their going concern to make sure their employees are protecting themselves and the vast numbers of patients relying on them.
lark
(23,094 posts)They also mandate that the vaccinations be taken or a letter from a physician be provided with proof the vaccine would be unsafe for their named health condition. People talk about Florida man and with Death Sentence as governor, well what can I say. However TX is is clearly worse than FL. inn this category.
My friend is still working at the hospital where I worked for 20 years and she got hers early in Jan. Everyone in the co. did.

(4,980 posts)That last 11% has a fat month to figure out if theyre for hokum or healthcare, Methodist-style.
I appreciate their stance, even if it shouldnt be needed, and to your point, Texas has to get out of the deadly telephone game being perpetuated by the right wing media and politicians hosing the rural areas with bad information.
Can assume that the ones that arent yet vaccinated are mostly cranks/woo-woos/wingers and theres always a few in a big city.

(4,980 posts)Theyve already concocted this year. We practical Texans are going to survive their terrible new policies that are already unpopular, and must be unstoppable in our GOTV efforts.
Methodist and the Medical Center in Houston are rightly prestigious, so used car salesmen in the lege should take a backseat on this one.

(2,748 posts)The governors recent edict that businesses that dont want to will not have to require masks, didnt change much.
Most stores and businesses are still requiring them. Many of them found out most of their customers wanted them.

(12,531 posts)I mean, the anecdotal evidence is clear; most people dying or going to the hospital have been older people. But now that most older folks have been vaccinated, the majority of admissions are now YOUNGER people.
What the hell does that tell us??
Act_of_Reparation
(9,116 posts)The COVID-19 vaccines were granted emergency use authorization by the FDA in December. Most hospital systems cannot make these vaccines a requirement until they are granted full approval

(17,003 posts)for whatever reason they want. Youre guessing about whether or not they can be required in their current approval status.

(59 posts)Where all of my healthcare providers reside, stating that all staff, Doctors and all others, would be taking the vaccine. All will have either the Pfizer, or Moderna variants as they are not using the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
I received my 2nd dose last Wednesday, and my wife is due for her 2nd dose on 5/21 through her job. MUSC is by far the largest Hospital system in South Carolina, and one of the largest in the Southeast. It is a teaching facility as well, and all students will also be vaccinated.
I feel relieved to have the vaccine, but I worry for others who choose to refuse it. I just do not understand the thought process that is required to put your life at risk for no good reason. By this fall, I can see another massive surge in Civid-19 cases, and expect yet more restrictions to be mandated. If people would just do the right thing, this could all be behind us by the start of 2022.

(32,634 posts)Any large employer, or company that deals with the public such as a restaurant or bar, etc., needs to require their employees to get vaccinated. It's the liability, stupid: companies could be held liable if an employee or a customer becomes infected on their property. I'm sure the lawsuits are coming very soon down the road.
If employees aren't vaccinated, they can't be working there - and it will be enforced by employers and their insurance companies. Either get vaxxed or lose your paycheck.

(13 posts)Heres what should happen next. Interstate commerce providers (airlines, hotels, etc) should require customers prove vaccination before being allowed on/in. CDC should put it out as recommendation. BTW Id like to see right to work Texas tell employers who they can/cant fire.
