Biden says he will raise refugee cap to 62,500
Source: Washington Post
President Biden on Monday announced that he will raise the cap on refugees who can be admitted the United States to 62,500, a move that follows months of wavering and fierce blowback from human rights advocates and fellow Democrats.
Today, I am revising the United States annual refugee admissions cap to 62,500 for this fiscal year. This erases the historically low number set by the previous administration of 15,000, which did not reflect Americas values as a nation that welcomes and supports refugees, Biden said in a written statement.
He added, The new admissions cap will also reinforce efforts that are already underway to expand the United States capacity to admit refugees, so that we can reach the goal of 125,000 refugee admissions that I intend to set for the coming fiscal year.
Bidens announcement comes several weeks after the White House announced in mid-April that the president was leaving the cap where Trump set it. That decision prompted a furious uproar and was followed hours later by a subsequent White House announcement Biden intended to raise the cap after all. The Biden administration said in February that it was looking to raise the cap for this fiscal year to 62,500. The next fiscal year starts in October.

(1,568 posts)I feel like there was a push right out of the gate to fix this - but we needed to tackle Covid first because Covid and transmission is a part of the crisis at the border. I feel like our own party was unfair to Biden about immigration policy and that the poor folks in the admin were still just putting out Trumpian fires first.
I don't know. Just wanted to vent. I know it is a massive crisis. But I think if he didn't take care of some of the rollbacks of policy and paperwork, and get our ducks in a more solid row regardiing Covid, the crisis would have spiraled. He was cautious and smart, not "wavering."

(127,317 posts)The GOP will spend 4 - 8 years completely wrecking the American society and then when people have had enough and elect a Democrat, the first thing that has to happen is to immediately act to put a tourniquet on the gaping wound, and then start the therapy so the wound can heal. And then first thing out of their mouths is "Why haven't you done x and y already!!!11!!!! That's what you campaigned on!!!11!!11!"...completely ignoring how bad things had gotten and how bad they still were.
They did the same thing to Obama after he was inaugurated where that month, the U.S. registered a loss of something like 750K jobs that month alone (Jan. 2009).
