FEC Recommends Ban on Shady Fundraising Tactic Used by Trump: 'Almost Like Theft'

Source: Mediaite

After a New York Times investigation highlighted how former President Donald Trumpís campaign used a shady fundraising tactic ó prechecked recurring donation boxes ó the Federal Election Commission (FEC) has taken a rare unanimous vote to recommend to Congress that they pass a law banning the practice.

As the Times reported back in early April, during the 2020 election, Trumpís campaign found itself at a cash disadvantage with now-President Joe Biden, and started sending out online fundraising solicitations that made repetitive donations the default option. Some of these were set up to authorize additional donations later in the campaign, some for monthly or even weekly recurring donations. The campaign also sometimes used prechecked boxes to double the donation and made the language and disclaimers complex and confusing.

The Times interviewed multiple Trump donors who thought they were making one-time contributions and were shocked to discover thousands of extra dollars being sent to the campaign, sometimes overdrawing their bank accounts. Unhappy donors made so many fraud complaints to their banks and credit card companies that the Trump campaign issued $122.7 million in total refunds, or 10.7 percent of their total donations through the WinRed online platform, a number far above the norm for a presidential campaign.

-snip-

The FEC reviewed the issue and voted unanimously, 6-0, to recommend to Congress that they pass a law banning this type of pre-selected repetitive donation. The FEC is evenly split, with 3 Republican appointees and 3 Democrats, and had spent most of the recent years gridlocked on partisan lines. Regarding this specific fundraising tactic, however, the six were all on the same page ó including the three Republican commissioners appointed by Trump himself.

At the least, it has to be mail fraud.

2. Interesting how nobody even has to think about maybe going to jail for this, isn't it?

If if wasn't outright theft, it was clearly a con job, and obviously malicious fraud.

But I guess there's just, conveniently, no laws.

7. Even if there were laws....

republicans never seem to pay any price for breaking them. Nothing would ever touch The Orange One, no way, no how.

4. That's the WinRed site, and the Trump campaign had to refund millions of dollars they had stolen.

People who thought they were making a one-time donation ended up having their donations turned into monthly or even weekly donations. Disgusting.

5. Is there anything that Trump does that's not a crime?

I would say breathing, but considering he got a really terrible case of COVID, even his breath is evil!

10. Buy a pre-paid MC/Visa card for just what you want to give.

Buy a pre-paid MC/Visa card for just what you want to give.

It will cost you a few bucks more but they will not be in your credit card or checkbook.

15. The FEC has always been a paper tiger when it comes to enforcement.

They "investigate" but never prosecute.
Another org. I believe has been infiltrated by tRump-humpers.
We'll see if they do something this time.

I agree with some of the posts that blame the gullible, but the tactic
is lower than whalesh*t and should be banned with strong enforcement
and a severe penalty for each violation.

Irrevocable disqualification from running
for future office comes to mind.

Besides, in reality it's THEFT plain and simple.
