Overcrowded Border Jails Give Way to Packed Migrant Child Shelters

WASHINGTON ó Biden administration officials have insisted that they have gotten better control of a surge of migrant children that has swamped detention centers at the U.S.-Mexico border.

But documents obtained by The New York Times indicate that the problem has moved to other facilities, like convention centers in Dallas, San Diego and Long Beach, Calif., which are nearing capacity as funds for more space are scarce.

The migrant children are far better cared for at the new facilities, operated by the Department of Health and Human Services, than they were at crammed jails run by the Department of Homeland Securityís Customs and Border Protection, according to administration officials. But health department officials are taking about a month on average to move the children and teenagers out of government custody and into the care of a family member or sponsor in the United States.

The White House this week allowed the Department of Health and Human Services to redirect $850 million to migrant care, according to an internal document dated May 6. Another nearly $850 million could be available in the coming weeks. Before that transfer was completed, the administration estimated that it would need another $4 billion before the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, according to the document.

2. What is the Times up to? The GOP hyping of border crowding,...

which the trump admin was responsible for, has died down as the Biden admin has been successful in lessening it, is the Times trying to start them up again?

Makes one wonder whose side the Times is on?

5. They have also anti-Clinton for years, but especially during 2016.

I was astonished that they published an excerpt from Clinton Cash, by a writer who was known for his false hit pieces on the Clintons. That was not journalism, and it was totally irresponsible.

The Times still has some excellent opinion writers and reporters, but in my opinion they have become less relevant as a news source. Some of their choices for opinion pieces that present the conservative side are little more than Republican propagandists who twist events to make Republicans look good. Their headline writers for news articles often mislead, with an article not really supporting what is being reported.

I think the Washington Post is better, though they have some crazies too, like Hugh Hewitt. I donít read anything he writes anymore because it is all Republican la la land.

Iím sure itís difficult for daily papers to keep the articles coming out, and they have fewer stories now because Biden rarely tweets and he has hired competent people who are doing their jobs with little or no controversy. After Trump, theyíre all addicted to the crisis du jour.

4. Did the Times article make ONE mention of the fact that the Biden Administration is now reuniting...

...children with their parents starting this week?

The first, on Tuesday, were separated for THREE years!

Or are they just trying to imply that the Biden Administration is just hiding people who were at the border, i.e., "but documents obtained by the New York Times................"

Misleading article, especially the shitty headline!

6. The author is a "but" head

He uses "but" twice in the excerpt -- once as if he is contradicting administration claims and once as if he's contradicting that the children are far better off -- but in both cases, he's really just moving the goal posts.
