Scottish pro-independence party heads for election win

The Scottish National Party (SNP), which has vowed to hold an independence referendum that could tear the United Kingdom apart should it be returned to power, will find out on Saturday if it has won a majority in Scotland's parliament.

The SNP says it will seek to hold a new vote on secession if a pro-independence majority is returned to the devolved 129-seat parliament. This would set up a clash with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who says he will refuse any such vote because Scots backed staying in the United Kingdom in 2014.

Results showed the SNP on course for a fourth consecutive term in office having triumphed in 47 of 56 seats declared so far, including in three key battlegrounds.

There were signs of some tactical voting by supporters of pro-union parties, meaning an outright SNP majority could be a close-run thing. Final results are due later on Saturday.

1. UK should let them go. Just hope they can survive on their own.

Never understood forcing a country to stay if they donít want to. Just let them know, thereís no returning.

2. Interesting.

I heard a story on NPR yesterday about Northern Ireland and the huge hassles it's experiencing thanks to Brexit. It said that it's possible that in a decade or so they might vote for reunification with the Republic.

I wonder if it could happen a lot sooner. I recall when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, every expert out there said that Germany would remain two entirely separate countries indefinitely. Indefinitely lasted until October 3, 1990, less than a year later.

6. East Germans said 'Goodbye, Lenin' - the Scots and Irish might say 'Goodbye, Boris'.

It'll be interesting to see how all this pans out.

3. Outright SNP majority now looks very unlikely, but Green seats make it a pro-independence majority

Regional list results are now coming in, and, combined with the Tories holding on to Aberdeenshire West, the SNP hasn't a realistic path to a majority on its own: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-56995136

This gives Johnson an extra quibble in the argument about whether to hold a referendum. It may get decided in a court, eventually.

4. headline updated: Scottish pro-independence party heads for election win, but without majority

The Scottish National Party (SNP), which has vowed to hold an independence referendum that could tear the United Kingdom apart if it returns to power, headed for victory on Saturday in Scotland's parliament election but without an outright majority.

The SNP says it will seek to hold a new vote on secession if a pro-independence majority is returned to the devolved 129-seat parliament, setting the stage for a showdown with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Johnson has said he would refuse any such vote because Scots backed staying in the United Kingdom in 2014.

Results on Saturday showed the SNP well on course for a fourth consecutive term in office having triumphed in 57 of the 68 seats declared so far.

5. Talk about disrespect!

Look at all the scheming and murder Queen Mary and her son James did to take over the British Throne!
