Germany commemorates icon of resistance to Nazism

Source: AP

BERLIN (AP) — Germany on Sunday commemorated the 100th birthday of Sophie Scholl, a young woman who became an icon for her role in the anti-fascist ‘White Rose’ resistance group.

Scholl and other group members were arrested in 1943 after scattering leaflets critical of Adolf Hitler’s regime and the war from a balcony at the University of Munich. She and her brother Hans were executed four days later after refusing to apologize.

The group’s story, including the Scholl siblings’ gradual awareness and then rejection of the horrors of National Socialist ideology and militarism, has become a staple of history lessons in German schools. It also has been regularly dramatized in films, plays and most recently an Instagram account.

On Sunday, dozens of young people in Munich took part in a theatrical live performance about Scholl’s life — held in the open air due to pandemic restrictions.

3. If that had happened in America, the media would be in full "both sides" mode.

And a certain political party would be condemning her.

Social media circulated a video from one of the late night talk shows in which people on the street were asked various questions about history, with the ultimate purpose of letting the audience delight in feeling so much smarter than these poor rubes.

One of the questions was: "which side one the American Civil War?" Predictably, a number of victims didn't know or answered incorrectly, and many on DU joined the laugh-fest.

Along with several others, I pointed out that, although the treasonous south surrendered and the treaty was signed, in a very real sense the Confederacy can be said to have won or at the very least is still pressing the fight with varying degrees of success.

I was, of course, scolded for my opinion, but that's how it goes.

And here we are today, still fighting the Civil War.

"Sophie Scholl, the final day"

Also check out "Come and See"

I highly recommend this movie. It is one of the best anti war movies.
