C.D.C Confirms More Cases of Rare Blood Clot Disorder Linked to J.&J. Vaccine

Source: New York Times

Federal health officials have now confirmed 28 cases, including six in men, of a rare blood clotting disorder in adults who have received the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine.

Dr. Tom Shimabukuro, the deputy director of the immunization safety office at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, presented the new cases on Wednesday at a meeting of a panel of advisers to the C.D.C.

The figure is an increase from the 15 confirmed cases, all of which were in women, that were reported at last month’s meeting.

Although officials have now identified a handful of cases in men, women - especially those between the ages of 30 and 49 - appear to remain at elevated risk. “The trend is that the reporting rates are higher in females compared to males in all age categories,” Dr. Shimabukuro said at the meeting.

1. Not to downplay a real risk here,

the emphasis is on rare. I had the J&J, and it was nice getting the one and done. I'm twenty or so years older than those who seem to have gotten the blood clots. Clearly, the solution is to give that vaccine to men and to older women only.

2. I listened to their session yesterday

from just before noon EDT until they closed out just after 5 pm EDT and heard their presentation on J & J and other matters after they had the vote on the Pfizer for 12 - 15 year olds.

I expect there may be more out there but it's a matter of a physician and particularly physician specialists, to actually ID that and try to confirm the possible cause. Still, given the number of shots that have been done to date, it's an extremely rare (but not zero) occurrence (and also seems to occur with the similarly developed AstraZeneca vaccine), but the adverse event hasn't been reported for either of the mRNA vaccines.

The slide deck for that presentation is here - https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/acip/meetings/downloads/slides-2021-05-12/07-COVID-Shimabukuro-508.pdf (PDF)

3. What percentage of people getting the vaccine in that age bracket are getting the blood clots

and what percentage of all people in that age bracket are getting the blood clots?
