McConnell privately assures GOP that Kyrsten Sinema will kill Biden's tax hike: report

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has privately assured his Republican colleagues that centrist Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., is likely to block President Joe Biden's proposed tax hikes on the wealthy and corporations, according to The Washington Post.

Biden has introduced a $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan that would be paid for with tax increases on corporations and a $1.8 trillion "American Families Plan" that would be funded with higher taxes on the wealthy and investors and increased IRS enforcement. Republicans are pushing a much smaller infrastructure counterproposal that would shift the tax burden from corporations to workers, and have loudly objected to the proposed tax increases. McConnell, however, does not seem worried about the hikes clearing the 50-50 Senate where a single Democrat can block any party-line vote.

McConnell has privately "reassured allies of Democrats' long odds in approving tax hikes, pointing in particular to the voting record of Sen. Kyrsten Sinema," according to the Post.

That suggests McConnell sees Sinema as a bigger impediment to Biden's proposals than Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who has called for raising taxes to pay for an infrastructure proposal as large as $4 trillion but wants a smaller increase on corporate taxes. Manchin has also rejected gas taxes and user fees proposed by Republicans as a tax on workers and commuters.

1. Pass it without the tax hikes.

Get the spending program on the books. Start working hard on the midterms.

Her only reason for affiliating as a Dem is all about her bisexuality and her support of LGBTQ rights. At one time she described herself as a libertarian.

3. Then bring to the floor a bill to raise taxes

Let Sinema vote no! Throw her out of the Senate, get a decent Democrat in.

Mitch is grasping at any straw to hang on. He tried the block speech. Biden laughed at him, said he did that before!

Biden has been around longer than Mitch. That is why he is inviting Republicans in. Mitch is now brain dead.

18. This is what I can't figure out

Both Sinema and Manchin won't be up for reelection until 2024. That's 3.5 years away, and it's an eternity in politics. By that point, all of this will be ancient history. Voters generally don't care what a politician did 3 years ago. Whatever they vote on now will be long forgotten by then. No one remembers individual votes, really.

11. It may. Hopefully. However.......

There is still the unknown of: is Arizona's demographic susceptible to societal shifts in political temperament? That goes for every red or purple state and we won't know the truth until the ballots are counted for the 2022 election.

So many, even in Arizona, have been told they're "conservatives" for so long that they actually believe it. It's ALL they believe in and for some, how many?, there has been no awakening to the new world order. The one where wall-to-wall lies and self-delusion are just not palatable.

8. I think McConnell is trolling libs

She has been a little timid, as a Dem in a red state. I work and grew up in her old house district and it is the former college townish more liberal area of the south valley in Phoenix Metro. She needs a couple or at least one more election cycle to settle in. The headlines bother me, but if she ran as Republican, elections would be easier for but she runs as a Democrat. The purpling and bluing of the state almost requires she play it safe to keep it safe for Dems - for now. The more the state turns away from voting auto red, the more liberal she will message and of course, vote.

Manchin is frustrating, but he knows what he needs to run on in typical elections. The question is - is there such thing as a typical election or does he need to run on liberal working class messaging and voting records?

16. That is true if they even understand what taxes really are in the first place.

They have been Pavlovially programmed to think that taxes on the wealthy are "job killers" and "death taxes". Their understanding is framed in the concept that taxes on wealthy are an unfair punishment for success. That's the only way they can conceptualize it and since they have no chance of associating, much less identifying, with wealthy people, they have no opportunity for insight to disabuse their misunderstanding. Most of them THINK they're already upper middle class which means, to their thinking, they're only a small step below "rich".

They do not know or accept the fact that virtually ALL the wealthy in America today connect that status to inherited, unearned, attributes. For instance: multi-generational investment and property assets, environmental experience of exposure to wealth and familial traditions of financial education and political influence, the fortunes of genetic selection such as health and IQ.

But, lets be honest, it's mostly inheriting so much that you simply couldn't squander it all in a single generation if you tried. Fact, Donald Trump was never really "wealthy". First and second generations of criminal "empires" rarely ever are.

44. Friend of mine volunteers in Habitat for Humanity...

She explained an important part of their work has to do with developing financial literacy, helping people understand the importance of home ownership and family wealth. I learned that people who receive support from the organization usually have to pay for the home, or at least contribute a sizable percentage of its cost. It helps to pay for materials, but also demonstrates how the home holds wealth. People want to keep up their home and protect their investment. And passing it on to the children is the cornerstone for building wealth long term.

Who else helps the poor own a piece of the action? People are locked in poverty for generations because that helps “keep them in their place.” Meanwhile, landlords like Fred the Klansman and Donny NAZI get wealthier and wealthier. And Congress — and jurists like Clarence Thomas — work for them who can pay.

run for the Senate. I don't know if he lives in Arizona, but that would be great if Scott Kelly ran and beat Sinema. And they're both retired astronauts, too. How cool is that? I'm assuming Scott is a Democrat, which I probably shouldn't do, but if he is, that'd be awesome if they were both in the Senate.

15. If this is accurate, then Sen. Sinema has changed a lot. She was a Nader supporter

previously:

"Sinema began her political career in the Arizona Green Party before joining the Arizona Democratic Party in 2004.

In 2000, Sinema worked on Ralph Nader's presidential campaign.[29] In 2001 and 2002, she ran for local elected offices as an independent and lost.[24] In 2002, The Arizona Republic published a letter from Sinema criticizing capitalism. "Until the average American realizes that capitalism damages her livelihood while augmenting the livelihoods of the wealthy, the Almighty Dollar will continue to rule", she wrote.[30]

While in the Green Party, Sinema was its local spokesperson, working to repeal the death penalty and organizing antiwar protests.[31] She had organized 15 antiwar rallies by the time the Iraq War began.[24] She also opposed the war in Afghanistan.[24] During a February 15, 2003 protest in Patriot's Square Park in Phoenix, a group led by Sinema distributed flyers portraying a U.S. servicemember as a skeleton "inflicting 'U.S. terror' in Iraq and the Middle East".[24] (A representative of Sinema has said that Sinema did not "approve or design" the flyers.[32]) In a 2003 opinion piece, Sinema declared that Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush were "the real Saddam and Osama lovers".[32] When asked on a local radio show whether she would oppose someone joining the Taliban and fighting on its behalf, Sinema responded, "Fine ... I don't care if you want to do that, go ahead."[24] During 2005 and 2006, Sinema co-hosted a radio show with 9/11 truther Jeff Farias.[24]"

and today:

"Following her election to Congress, Sinema shifted toward the political center, joining the conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition and the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus and amassing a "reliably moderate-Democratic" voting record.[77] Sinema worked for the adoption of the DREAM Act,[78] even hiring DREAM Act advocate Erika Andiola as a district outreach staffer.[79]"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyrsten_Sinema#Early_political_involvement

If these accounts are accurate, it appears to me that Sen. Sinema is more interesting in getting attention then actually helping people

and if that doesn't work, twist their arms.

The government needs to increase revenue thanks to Dumdum's reckless tax cuts in combination with the Covid disaster. They can raise taxes on the rich and corporate, or they can raise wages at the bottom and increase tax revenues that way. Ideally, they need to do both, but those two DINOs will never accept that.

It's what you do with balky toddlers, you offer them two bad choices and let them choose (bath time or bed time?).

as their constituents decide to vote for the real thing and replace them with Republicans. Only rarely does a progressive run in those states and win, although it has happened in the past. Mostly, state parties are afraid to let them run.

I don't know enough about Sinama's votes to make much of a determination, but Manchin had a 53% progressive rating last year, putting him far ahead of the "moderate" Murkowski, who clocked in at 20%. He's marginally better than a GOP.
