House Republicans unveil $400B transportation bill as negotiations on larger infrastructure package

Source: USA Today

WASHINGTON – House Republicans unveiled a five-year, $400 billion proposal for highways, bridges and transit Wednesday, the latest entry in the infrastructure sweepstakes on Capitol Hill.

The measure would be the largest transportation bill in history, more than 30% larger than the current program. It would give states more flexibility to spend their highway funding, set a two-year goal for environmental reviews of major projects, and streamline the permitting process.

-snip-

Yet despite its size, the proposal is the smallest of the three major infrastructure proposals floating in Congress.

It's less than the $568 billion plan Senate Republicans have introduced and a fraction of the $2.2 trillion proposal President Joe Biden and the Democrats are backing. Unlike the House GOP bill, both those proposals also include money for broadband, aviation and water projects and, in the administration's plan, billions more for housing, hospitals and schools as well as major investments in electric vehicles.

Let’s get that passed and move for more. Heck we didn’t just pass one coronavirus bill. We passed 3. Let’s get this moving. We may need 5 bills but the last 20 years we’ve had zero.

I'm all for improving/repairing public infrastructure IF there is a public buy in to build and maintain it. Too often, federal dollars go to some local project that serves very few folks just so politicians can get their name in the paper and show how they can "bring home the bacon". I also have a problem with Congressional Representatives and Senators voting "NO" on budgets then getting everything anyway.

Make state and local entities get matching money for their projects. Say, put up 10% and the feds will kick in the other 90%. Communities that want these improvements will be willing to help pay for them and folks who oppose all government spending will have to make due with what they got. Any money left over can be claimed by those willing to buy in.

This may hurt some communities that don't have ample resources but it will also keep the "no tax increase" folks in check and presumably happy with the results. Sorry, but I've about had enough with stick in the mud Republicans; time to hold them (and their supporters) accountable for their actions or more correctly lack of actions.

This has been ignored by every president for too long. The hiccup of the pipeline last week exposed how vulnerable we are to even the smallest incident. Imagine our Electricity going out nationwide for weeks. Anarchy.

“It would give states more flexibility to spend their highway funding...”

It’s not “their” funding. Once it goes to the states it can be diverted for all sorts of shit.
