House passes $1.9 billion Capitol security bill that faces Senate roadblocks

Source: CNBC

PUBLISHED THU, MAY 20 202112:19 PM EDT

The House passed a $1.9 billion U.S. Capitol security bill Thursday as Congress splinters over how to protect lives and the democratic process after the Jan. 6 insurrection.

The Democratic-held chamber approved the measure a day after it passed a bill to set up an independent commission to investigate the attack on the legislature. Opposition from Republican leaders has raised doubts about whether either proposal can get through the evenly split Senate.

The bill passed Thursday would pay back the National Guard and Washington D.C. for costs incurred securing the Capitol this year, and provide the Capitol Police with overtime pay, retention bonuses and trauma resources. It also would create a response force that would aid the Capitol Police in emergencies, boost security for members of Congress and fortify doors and windows in the Capitol.

Democrats moved to pass both pieces of legislation this week. They say it is vital to better understand how a mob of Trump supporters overran the Capitol and disrupted the count of President Joe Biden's electoral win -- and to prevent it from happening again. House Republican leaders, who have tried to divert attention from the attack and curb criticism of former President Donald Trump's election conspiracy theories that helped to fuel it, pushed against passage of both bills.

The Capitol Police who stood as the only fortress against a well planned insurection on Jan 6, are recognized & honored for their loyalty by the YES VOTES.

The others should be shamed out of office.
Hey, it says "..to uphold & Defend" not Defund. 🙄

Gratitude for the YES votes supporting our Capitol Police Heros.

They said the bill doesn't address white supremacy, radicalization, or disinformation.

Um ... oh never mind.

AOC was so BOLD in voting present.

I am sorry, someone explain this to me. We don't need the "defund the police". We need laws that hold them accountable. Congress should be pushing that now.

We got by with one vote. How sad is that. No funding for those that died protecting our houses, our Speaker, VP and all members including AOC and Pressley.

AOC was in tears and Pressley had her panic buttons removed...and they don't vote for updating security. I don't get it.
