Prosecutor in Trump criminal probe convenes grand jury to hear evidence, weigh potential charges

Source: Washington Post

by Shayna Jacobs and David A. Fahrenthold

May 25, 2021 at 1:57 p.m. PDT

NEW YORK — Manhattan's district attorney has convened the grand jury that is expected to decide whether to indict former president Donald Trump, other executives at his company or the business itself should prosecutors present the panel with criminal charges, according to two people familiar with the development.

The panel was convened recently and will sit three days a week for six months. It is likely to hear several matters — not just the Trump case — during the duration of its term, which is longer than a traditional New York state grand-jury assignment, these people said. Like others, they spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. Generally, special grand juries such as this one are convened to participate in long-term matters rather than to hear evidence of crimes charged routinely.

The move indicates that District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr.’s investigation of the former president and his business has reached an advanced stage after more than two years. It suggests, too, that Vance believes he has found evidence of a crime — if not by Trump then by someone potentially close to him or by his company.

Vance’s investigation is expansive, according to people familiar the probe and public disclosures made during related litigation. His investigators are scrutinizing Trump’s business practices before he was president, including whether the value of specific properties in the Trump Organization’s real estate portfolio were manipulated in a way that defrauded banks and insurance companies, and if any tax benefits were obtained illegally through unscrupulous asset valuation.

David Fahrenthold, political reporter for the Washington Post discusses the story he broke about the Manhattan district attorney convening a grand jury in its criminal probe into Donald Trump, and speaks to what kind of data and witnesses are likely to be used. Aired on 05/25/2021.

the Trump Foundation that was found to have broken the law on charity self-dealing, fined and eventually disestablished. He said the Foundation's taxes were done by the same accountants and contained many, many errors. It might be reasonable to assume Trump's personal and business taxes are similarly error-filled.

I have it on audio (read by the author) and listened to part of it again in my car on my way home from the dentist today. The part I heard today focused on Trump's first efforts in business on his own, rather than working for his father, and it's totally mind boggling how many millions(!) he "borrowed" from his father and squandered through abysmal business decisions (Atlantic City casinos). All the Trumps were averse to paying taxes, I can't imagine what they'll find examining his business records.

when Trump upgraded/updated Doral. The paint was the companies lowest quality brand and sold as such. Shortly after being applied, the paint began to fail. Trump tried to sue the paint contractor, but that didn't work since the paint was specified in the contract. Then he went after the paint company who did came and tested the paint and said it was exactly to spec, but they did offer Trump a credit of x number of gallons which he then used to repaint the rooms at Doral. Trump has been a grifter his entire life. There's every reason to believe that ALL his dealings follow the same script - lie, cheat, steal.

If things haven't imploded on the R's before the midterms, the tide can shift dramatically. A couple of indictments would go a long way towards convincing more people to stick with the D's.

It would seem that they are dragging it all out into 2022 on purpose. While that may serve our political aims, methinks it is still better to go for a quicker indictment and trial. Why? Trumpy's lawyers will delay any efforts here with multiple challenges anyway, So, let's go ahead now, endure those challenges and get him on the witness stand (or his henchmen at least) and start the trial.

In brief, let the TRIAL slip deeply into 2022!

The wheels of justice are supposed to move slowly, especially in cases like this where it is as much technical minutia data as legal fact.

This isn't a car theft or liquor store theft. It is a complex and well covered series of financial transactions. The grand jury is made up of carpenters, and teachers, and working parents in all walks of life other than what is being discussed.

It takes time.....

doesn't mean that there won't be indictments before that time frame.

I mean grand juries usually only meet once a week and this one is meeting 3 times a week. This tells me there is a lot going on.

his son Barry was paid to evade taxes. Once he's indicted, the pressure will wratchet up a few more notches on Alan to turn on Trump to save his son. Another son also works for the Trump Organization and could be a target, too.
