Virginia men’s lacrosse holds off Maryland to win its second straight national title

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — Connor Shellenberger sat in the stands a decade ago and watched Virginia upend Maryland to win a men’s lacrosse national championship on Memorial Day. ... Ten years later, he played a big part in the Cavaliers’ latest title celebration.

Shellenberger and Matt Moore both had four goals and two assists and Alex Rode made a save with five seconds remaining to preserve fourth-seeded Virginia’s wild 17-16 defeat of third-seeded Maryland in Monday’s national title game before 14,816 at Rentschler Field to claim its second consecutive national title.

“We kind of have this stereotype as an offense that we play hero ball, but we really do whatever the defense dictates us to do,” Shellenberger said. “We took it as a challenge. We didn’t want to back down from Maryland’s defense. We wanted to go right at them.”

It was an unorthodox back-to-back for the Cavaliers (14-4), who beat Yale to claim the 2019 title. Last year’s tournament was canceled in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Virginia claimed its seventh NCAA title. ... The combined 33 goals matched the title game record, first set in 1975 when Maryland defeated Navy, 20-13, and tied in 1983 when Syracuse edged Johns Hopkins, 17-16.

2. Close game, just like the D3 matchup.

RIT beats Salisbury in 2OT thriller, 15-14, to win first NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse championship

Ryan Barnable scored in the second overtime period to defeat Salisbury, 15-14, on Sunday at rainy Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut, delivering the Tigers their first NCAA Division III national title.

Salisbury won the opening faceoff of the second overtime, but RIT senior long-stick midfielder Taylor Jensen caused a turnover to give the Tigers possession with 3:47 on the clock. Setting up the offense, senior attackman Marley Angus took a shot that went wide of the net, but RIT backed up the shot to retain possession with 2:30 to play. On the restart, senior attackman Dawson Tait sent a pass from behind the goal to Barnable, who scored from just in front of the crease while falling down to seal the victory.

It’s the first DIII national championship game decided in overtime since 2006, when Cortland defeated Salisbury, 13-12.

“I think one other question I get asked is, do I feel pressure to win one. And that’s never been the case,” RIT coach Jake Coon said of winning the program’s first title. “I think we believe in each other. We have that support. Everything was there for the making. We just needed to make plays in a 60-minute game and we were able to do that today. So, wow, it’s a great feeling. Surreal.”

Charlotte North Breaks Records As Boston College Women’s Lacrosse Wins NCAA Championship

By Laura Berestecki | @LBerestecki | May 30, 2021, 2:50pm EDT

Fourth time’s the charm for Boston College as the women’s lacrosse team has won the NCAA Championship in the team’s 4th straight finals appearance! The Eagles, who beat undefeated UNC on Friday to get to the championship, faced another ACC foe today in Syracuse. After a fairly evenly matched first half, the Eagles ran away with the game in the second and won this one by a final score of 16-10.

Charlotte North picked up the first goal of the game to jump BC out to an early lead today, but Syracuse quickly tied things up. Cara Urbank and North then put BC up 3-1, but the Orange answered right back with 3 straight goals of their own to take their first lead of the game.

Jenn Medjid and Belle Smith, both assisted by Caitlynn Mossman, put BC back up 5-4, only for Syracuse to immediately score a pair and regain the lead. Seconds later Courtney Weeks tied things back up at 6, and Smith took another feed from Mossman to regain the BC lead, only for Syracuse to tie things at 7 a minute later.
