Democrat Melanie Stansbury to fill CD1 seat left vacant by Deb Haaland

Source: KOAT Television

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ó

Democrat Melanie Stansbury will be the next U.S. House Representative, representing New Mexicoís first Congressional District.

KOAT political expert Brian Sanderoff called the race for Stansbury in Tuesdayís Special Election.

The seat was left vacant after Rep. Deb Haaland resigned after she was confirmed as Secretary of Interior.

Stansbury has served as a New Mexico State Representative for the 28th District since 2019.

3. Very proud of our district.

The Republicans thought they might have a chance at this seat with their "law and order" campaign. Fortunately most of my fellow citizens in this district saw right through this. As my husband and I and our newly registered 18 year old twin granddaughter voted early, my husband held the door for an elderly man and thanked him for voting. The elderly man replied, "Have to save our democracy". This was a very hopeful sign and a portent of the way the voting has gone. Congratulations Melanie!

6. This is big not because we won, we had this one. But the margin.

Iím not taking too much from it but most articles I read started a 20+ point win would bode well for democrats. But I donít think anyone expected a 30 point margin.

Most likely scenario, we canít take too much from it.

Best case and possible scenario in that the moderate independents are now democratic leaning. And some small percentage of republicans are alarmed about the direction of the Republican Party. I know a few who feel homeless. Did not vote for trump and are despondent politically. Itís either bat shit crazy, Democratic or 3rd party.

7. I didn't share your confidence

because special elections don't bring out a lot of people.

However, people here remember Heather Wilson all too well and don't want to take a chance on repeating the embarrassment.

100% paper ballots also made a huge difference here.

8. I did not mean my post to be too optimistic.

Itís a safe seat. But did you expect a 30 point win?

It probably is not an indicator of future races. But I feel better than had it been a 15 point win.

12. Not in a million years

which is why I made my nasty crack about Heather Wilson. I think that memory is going to last a long time.

There's a reason when I fled Boston winters I ended up here.

13. Being a Florida resident I had to google Heather Wilson.

Seems Yíall have changed in the last 15 years.

I guess her election was suspicious?

19. What changed was going to 100% paper ballots

I'm surprised old Heather doesn't live in the national conciousness after her performance over Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction that momentarily exposed a boob with a nipple ring during the Super Bowl halftime show:

You'd think that poor breast had firebombed every kindergarten in the country. And for the record, Wilson's children were old enough to know a hell of a lot more than she ever did.

21. I'm glad we switched

I remember in 2002 voting on the touch screen for Richard Romero and it would change it to Wilson :/

24. 2004 was what did it.

To believe Dubya won this state, you'd have to believe 19,000 New Mexicans braved the cold and lines to vote for a handful of local judges, while ignoring all the national races, because that was the discrepancy.

That's why we switched to paper in 2005.

9. We worked really hard on this campaign in RED Valencia County. The Nov election was a blowout of 2-1

This time, we came close. R got 46 more votes than our D, Melanie. This bodes well for 2022. If we work hard, we can turn Valencia County BLUE in '22!!!

10. Not surprised (I live in Albuquerque)

We have a Democratic mayor and a Democratic majority city council.

We also have a Democratic governor and a Democratic state legislature.

15. A lot of angst over the R strategy of running on

"de-funding" the police which is no different from the crime fear-mongering they've run on for years.

22. Yes, last night on Maddow's show,

Kormacki said Dems were looking for a margin between Haaland's +16 and Biden's +23. She won by 25 (60-35, balance third party).
