Coca-Cola Was Just Banned in This One Southern County

Source: MSN

If it were a really hot summer day in the South, you'd seek out a nice, cold drink, right? That just got a little tougher in one North Carolina community, after county leaders decided to ban all Coca-Cola vending machines over what they refer to as Coke's "left-wing" values.

If it were a really hot summer day in the South, you'd seek out a nice, cold drink, right? That just got a little tougher in one North Carolina community, after county leaders decided to ban all Coca-Cola vending machines over what they refer to as Coke's "left-wing" values.

Big brands face routine controversies, and the Coca-Cola Co. has had plenty on its plate lately. In particular, the beverage giant has been an unexpected player in the 2020 U.S. Presidential election's fallout, as the Atlanta-based brand issued a public statement addressing their view of what conservative Georgians call the "Election Integrity Act." If passed, the bill would complicate the logistics that enable some Georgians to vote. Some Democratic figures in government have stated that the bill is unjust and even racist.

Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey has publicly agreed with these opinions—and recently, the brand issued a statement from Quincey in which he said: "The Coca-Cola Company does not support this legislation, as it makes it harder for people to vote, not easier."

That's reportedly why a group of commissioners in northern North Carolina's Surry County just voted 3-2 to ban all Coca-Cola machines from the county, according to local Winston-Salem TV news station WXII.

It's especially egregious when it comes from a party that claims to support the "freedom of choice" provided by laissez-faire capitalism.

I'm assuming that, if anyone decides to enforce this outrageous law, it will be challenged in the courts and promptly thrown out. Otherwise, what's to stop, say, local governments in major cities (most of which are overwhelmingly blue) to ban Murdoch and Sinclair from owning media outlets in those cities, and even forbid local cable companies and bookstores from carrying channels or papers from those entities?

And let me tell you, even though Pepsi is the "taste born in the Carolinas," I would crawl over scorpions to choose Coke over Pepsi!

Surry County is next to the county I grew up in, and so we spent a lot of time there. It is mainly rural with a few small towns, including Mount Airy and Pilot Mountain, which both kinda inspired Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show. They've also had a quite a few local Democrats who have held office in the last 20 years, so this seems weird to me. Of course, it was a close vote - but why did they single out Coke for being Woke (see what I did there)??

This, like most conservative nonsense, will probably backfire.

I would remind those who may not know this, but Pepsi was invented in North Carolina. People from NC are not going to be so worried about it from that perspective. Now, the fact that this childish display happened there as opposed to in Georgia just shows how weird these rethugs can be. Boycotting a business is one thing. Making everyone else adhere to your whining with no other cause than you don't like it is totalitarianism. Seeing yet another example of right wing hypocrisy is not surprising. Seeing it stay in place will be.
