Ten Senate Democrats and Republicans say they reached five-year, nearly $1 trillion infrastructure d

Source: Washington Post

A bipartisan group of 10 Senate Democrats and Republicans reached a new deal on infrastructure on Thursday, agreeing to a nearly $1 trillion, five-year package to improve the country’s roads, bridges, pipes and Internet connections.

The new blueprint, described by four people familiar with the plan, marks a fresh attempt to resurrect negotiations between congressional lawmakers and the White House after an earlier round of talks between President Biden and the GOP fell apart this week. But it remains unclear if the early accord will prove to be enough to satisfy either the White House or a sufficient number of lawmakers on Capitol Hill at a time when disagreements between the parties are rife.

The new deal is the product of five Democrats and five Republicans — Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), and Mark R. Warner (D-Va.).

'Time is running out:' Democrats are split over White House strategy related to infrastructure.
Their early agreement calls for about $974 billion in infrastructure spending over five years, which comes to about $1.2 trillion when extrapolated over eight years, according to the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details had not yet been released formally. The package includes roughly $579 billion in new spending.

They have all the usual "moderate" suspects willing to support it.

I still doubt they'll be able to get the other 5 needed to avoid a filibuster.

How many hours before Turtle comes out against it, and sinks the SLIM chance that currently exists of getting it to a vote.

Walking away from that in exchange for a reconciliation bill. A chance to prove our govt works will be irresistible to them.

I've wondered for awhile if, with the Fed juicing the economy with low interest rates and employment bouncing back, the economy needs a now but not forever infrastructure plan. Something that gets the job done but doesn't pretend to be able to say what's needed 3 years from now.

But no worries. This compromise will surely harden the other 45 Republicans against it, so no chance of passing.

...in the interest of austerity? I respect that. It is very Paul Tsongas-like, but many Democrats would consider him to be Republican-lite these days.

Social programs/entitlements because taxing the wealthy and non-tax paying corporations is socialism...or some such shit. With out tax increases on the wealthy it will be the poor who pay for the infrastructure the wealthy use the most and pay the least.

That just makes no sense. This is more than the stimulus package in 2009, and with ARPA, it is bigger then Trump's big accomplishment, which was a tax cut.

Chump change compared to what?

The American Society of Civil Engineers does a report card of American infrastructure. The latest one notes that, in order to achieve a grade of "B" - currently the grade is "C-" - The US will need to invest $5.937 trillion over the next 8 years. Current commitments over that timeframe is $3.350 trillion, a shortfall of $2.588 trillion. Adding the >$1 trillion proposed still leaves a shortfall of $1.588.
Their list of categories include the following:

Surface Transportation
Water / Wastewater /Storm water
Electricity
Airports
Inland Waterways & Marine Ports
Dams
Hazardous & Solid Waste
Levees
Public Parks & Recreation
Schools

The Democratic bill includes more categories including, but not limited to:
Internet/universal broadband
Continuing expenses related to Covid-10 and preparation for future pandemics

Please note that the ACSE grade of "B" means - Good, adequate for now. Frankly, I want to shoot for a grade of "A" - exceptional, fit for the future. Because I plan to be living in the future.

it is only $579 billion in new spending.

Likely is a no-go with President Biden, especially if it contains user-fees or increases in gasoline taxes to pay for it-- which would violate his campaign pledge not to raise taxes on anyone with incomes under $400k.

the Republicanss offered Biden and he rejected due to where the funding was coming from("unspent" Covid relief funds). Simple idea ask the Republicans if their bosses want to continue losing money because the transportation system is bad and the Internet system is garbage.
